Maybe the meida should give up on fast and try for accurate?

There were so many errors today it's impossible to get the details straight even now.

A few examples:

The shooter killed his mother a kindergarten teacher at the school.
Wrong. His mother is not a teacher at the school, so far the investigators are not able to find any connection to her and the school beyond one parent who said they thought maybe she was a substitute teacher. She is not listed as having worked at the school, however.

The shooter was Ryan Lanza, 24 of NJ.
Wrong. It was Adam Lanza, 20 of CT.

The error was made because the shooter had stolen his brother's ID.
Wrong. The brother has not been in contact with the shooter since 2010.

The brother Ryan Lanza was taken in to police custody.
Wrong. He and the father were both being questioned by police, but he is not in custody.

I get an error in reporting now and again, but this is a bit extreme. The worst part of it is the media outlets were all passing the disinformation back and forth to each other.

Just wait a little while until the details emerge. Then report the facts, not some crazy gossip you're getting from a desk cop who talked to a beat cop who talked to a witness, etc.

I remember an incident several years ago involving several trapped American miners. After 4 days of searching for them, word spread that all but one of the miners had survived. Everyone was hopeful as the miners were being brought up especially the familes of the trapped miners.

They brought up one miner who was just barely alive...............and that was it. The rest of the miners were found dead. In their rush to tell the story, the media got things backwards - the story wasn't about only one miner dying, but it was about only one miner surviving.

lied us into two wars? The errors you point out are not any big deal, the facts will all come out eventually. I imagine in any event like this there is a lot of confusion. When you have cable news that has to fill their time 24/7 you are going to get stuff like that. How can you stop it, go back to 30 minutes at 630pm? Make it illeagal to report the news?

It really is New Town. Not Newton. When we heard Newton my husband and both looked at each other and said "huh"? We have lived in CT all of our lives so that one was weird.

Some things were not reported correctly because of the outright confusion and shock, it was understandable. But some stuff, like Nancy Lanza being a full time teacher at the school is still being reported tonight.

And perhaps the same for us on DU as well? I had to point out that it wasn't cool to be posting pics and FB pages of one "Ryan Lanza" with declarative "here is the shooter" statements this morning.

that I stopped watching corporate media. I couldn't stand the speculation and rumor in place of actual facts any longer.
