Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

Fri Dec 14, 2012, 10:03 PM

Wow, John Boehner actually did something really right and very classy!

Rachel just read this: "There will be no weekly Republican Address this weekend so that President Obama can speak for the entire nation at this time of mourning. I join the president -- and all Americans -- in sending prayers and condolences to the victims' loved ones."

Wow -- good going, Mr. Speaker!

(first and maybe only time you'll see that term of respect coming out of me)

1. Maybe he does have some feelings after all! Sure couldn't prove it on many other

occasions.

2. It is not a popular position here at DU

But I actually have a decent amount of respect for John Boehner. Don't agree with him all the time however.

Wonder if ya make it up to 47% for things you really like, such as dihydrogen monoxide.

5. Good point.....but to hear him actually deferring to Obama and saying he speaks for the nation

is a really, really new one. I've never heard any Republican say something like that since he was elected, at least not in my recall. I've heard Republicans like Crist support him, but never one of the vehemently anti-Obama-being-president Republicans say anything even close to this. It's the kind of thing that'll set lots of right-wing teeth gnashing.

16. You got that right..

"It's the kind of thing that'll set lots of right-wing teeth gnashing."

It's also that kind of national tragedy that calls out for decency from even the opposing rabid anti-President Obama gops. We'll see if there's any fallout on boner from this.

18. I was thinking that

There were several other times during Obama's presidency when I felt he deserved such respect and did not get it.

Democrats (rightly) deferred to Bush after 9/11 to speak as the leader of the nation. I am glad to see Boehner showing President Obama the same respect.

7. That's what I was thinking

He may have made an appropriate choice to not say anything at all since there's nothing he could say without endangering his own interests. I don't think I could ever call him "classy" though.

Give him a couple days, he'll say something totally wrong.

14. Yippy for him.

Actually, the best way he can serve his country in this great hour of need is to gather up his nincompoops and help our president do the work that our citizens are begging them all to do. And while they are at it, pass some stricter gun reform laws that ensure the protection and safety of our children. Prayers and condolences may be helpful to the families of the dead, but just plain good common sense and a cheap ink pen from the dollar store will go a long ways to keeping tragedies like these from happening again and again.

19. I hope he's forced into it this time......

we'll see. I'm seeing much more leeway from right-wingers on this tonight than I have before. I'm hearing a call for more "rational" laws on national, corporate-owned CBS, ABC & NBC news (not just MSNBC). This time......please, this time....let it lead to forcing TPTB into doing....or at least enacting measures that move toward....doing the right things.

38. I'm actually pleasantly surprised

to see that even the Republicans have some limit on what they won't use to trash the President. I would cynically have expected him to immediately use it to state something along the lines of this is what happens when we have a welfare state which the president supports, or other such BS.
