Michigan approves concealed weapons in schools, churches

The same day as the Newtown school shooting, Michigan passed a bill that allows the carrying of concealed weapons in previously off-limits areas, including schools.

Michigan passed a law Friday that will allow the carrying of concealed weapons in previously off-limits areas including schools, churches, day cares and sports stadiums.

The bill cleared the Senate on Thursday, and was approved by the Republican-controlled House Friday, the same day that 27 people, including 20 children, were killed by gunfire at a Connecticut school.

Another provision in the bill eliminates county-controlled concealed weapons licensing boards, having sheriffs assume their duties instead, Click On Detroit reported.

The current law in Michigan prohibited concealed weapons in schools, churches, day cares, hospitals, dorms, casinos and any public entertainment venue that had a capacity of over 2,500 people, according to Petoskey News. Violating the law earned a civil infraction and a $500 fine, as well as a six-month suspension of a concealed pistol license.

2. I trust those who voted for this went out for a celebratory beverage tonight, knowing what they did.

I hope they will be ill tonight, after too much imbibing.

'Cause I do not think they are oriented to the accurate place or time.

Sheer insanity.

6. Isn't that the brightest f**king thing in the world to do. Like I said in another post,

we need to have armed guards X 2 at every entrance to our schools. In addition to being armed, these guards must also be proficient in hand to hand combat. ie; Navy Seals. We are encountering far to many of these incidents, where innocent people are being killed.

12. You've got to be kidding!!!

That would turn a school into a combat zone of shooters shooting each other and even more innocents being shot in the cross fire. So how does the guard at the entrance know who a shooter is???? The shooter at Sandy Hook was the son of teacher. He wouldn't have been suspected. He could have walked right in...gone to his mothers class room and killed before the guards even knew what was happening. It could be an irrate parent or in the case of VA tech, a student. Even a small school has lots of rooms and you can't post someone at each room.

It is about the guns! There are a lot of sick, angry people in the world. A gun is the easiest way for them to do the most damage.

People and particularily republicans love to say that we live in he best country in the world. If we have to have armed guards in schools we will not even be close to being the best....we will be no differnet than third world country.

13. So you would rather have 20 kids killed and a number of adults than face the fact that

we have serious risk in not only our schools, but other public areas.

Sorry, I don't agree with you. I have Grand Children, who I want to see come home safe and sound from school and whatever it takes to make that happen is fine with me.

19. Third world countries don't have school shootings.

We are not a third world country because we are a nation built on slavery and genocide.

Who we are culturally was in place long ago, before most of the Native Nations in the Americas were exterminated by guns!

Who we are culturally was in place long ago, before Africans were forced into slavery by guns!

21. Third world countries don't have school shootings.

The USA is not a third world country because they are a nation built on slavery and genocide.

What the USA is culturally was in place long ago, before most of the Native Nations in the Americas were exterminated by guns!

What the USA is culturally was in place long ago, before Africans were forced into slavery by guns!

Guns made America "great" at killing people and stealing their land and gold. Just ask anyone in the Pine Ridge Concentration Camp.

18. Every person needs therir own armed guard everywhere by this rationale

We need a society and a culture that doesn't need armed guards anywhere. An armed guard is a non=productive person, a drain on society, a money pit whose pension and social security continue long after they are off their produce nothing job.

10. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the law saying guns

are not allowed on school property a federal law? How do they propose to get around that?

And can some gun nut tell me where in the Bible it says "Thou shalt pack in order to worship"?

What am I missing here?

14. What you are missing is that the Michigan legislature and Governor are insane

The lame duck session has pushed through what amounts to a tea bagging fantasy. The Governor is signing with reckless abandon.

22. The law change makes things more restrictive.

Previously open carry was allowed in schools. Now it is restricted to concealed carry, which requires a background check and has a higher age limit.
