Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

It's a bit late to be debating gun control.

3D printing technology makes any gun control plan meaningless. Within 10 years direct metal laser sintering printers will be cheap enough for anyone to afford. At that point, the gun control debate will be one of free speech. The necessary files to make a gun will be readily available and anyone with the desire will be able to print out an ar-15 in their basement. No skill required.

So why not instead of ignorantly banning guns, we instead find an actual solution to the problem. It's not a gun problem, its a human problem. Find out why people are perpetrating mass murders and work to find a solution, rather than infringing upon the rights of law abiding people. I get it, you don't like guns and think they are scary. That doesn't mean that no one should have one, it isn't up to you to decide that. However we do it, we need to find a solution where the rights of both sides are preserved.

...for telling me that I was "dancing in the blood of innocents" - I at some point must have taken him off. He's back on ignore.

My to you on this awful fucking day. I can only hope that we will get there as a country some day. I'm not sure we can take many more days like today - my mother was in inconsolable tears when I told her the news today.

33. Thank you my friend - I've been heartsick all day. Hugged both my kids when I picked them

up from school today - "what's up Dad?" my daughter asked. She hadn't been told. That was tough. Give your mother a hug for me too; it's been a tough day for every one with a conscience, a sense of humanity, and a belief in hope.

We will get there one day, we've got to have hope even in the middle of this awful nightmare unfolding on the national stage.

3. the tell tale sign of the NRA is --don't talk about it, don't talk about it, be quiet. be quiet...

don't bother talking about it, dont' talk about gun control.

don't bother, it won't work.

don't bother, try this other thing --that's always nebulous.

be quiet, be quiet --as if something is harmed by talking about it.

and always in the aftermath of a tragedy.

like night follows day, this argument is so predictable, it hurts.

5. Go ahead and talk about it, but gun owners won't accept the loss of their rights.

The 1994 AWB saved no lives and prevented no crimes. So what's next? Anything that bans specific types of guns, parts or accessories will not only never work, but will never be accepted.

8. if you want us to talk about it, why do you keep trying to get us NOT to?

nice try.

also, we have several DUers that are gun owners who have posted quite the opposite of what you say they think or will put up with.

so based on your being wrong, i say that your exhortations to shut up and talk about something else are not a good idea.

12. In 1981 they said cities would never be able to close the bath houses

People simply wouldn't accept the loss of their civil liberties.

How many bath houses are there around today? How many people today feel that closing the bath houses was a tyrannical infringement on their liberty? None. That's the answer.

It will be the same when we deal with the gun death epidemic. The fanatics who choose to live in an irrational and irresponsible way will gripe and moan, just as the bath house radicals did. But we are in an epidemic, and we must take appropriate measures for the public health and the public good. Fuck gun owners who don't like it, and fuck their acceptance. The public good trumps their sill;y fucking hobby that they dress up as some kind of essential liberty. It is no more a guaranteed liberty than were the bath houses. In an epidemic, you shut down the cause of the epidemic. Period.

10. Nothing is impossible

We criminalize it. I'd much rather fill prisons with these dangerous wackadoos than with drug offenders.

3D print a gun? Ten fucking years in a federal prison, no parole. Done.

We'll see just how impossible it is then.

14. What does a murderer care about your prison sentence?

If they are going to die anyway, what do they care about consequences? Prohibition doesn't work, we've learned that from drugs. Sometimes you have to accept that you will never be able to control everyone's actions. The solution to our current problem is difficult. In this instance, even if you had more regulations, the guns would still have been stolen and used in the crime.

19. Anybody who trades in illegal gun printing software gets it

What murderer? You print a gun, any gun, you're gone. You do it for fun? Gone. Hunting? Gone. Crime? It's a sentencing enhancement: gone. Ten years in a federal over and above whatever other charges you get. Indeed, we do this all the time, and it works. You commit a violent felony on an L Train in Chicago? That's ten years over and above. Attack a bus driver in NY? Sentencing enhancement. And, yes, we do child porn level enforcement and task forces. You say it will be impossible? I call bullshit.

We make laws and enforce them and your whole "It will all be moot" argument collapses. You haven't seen restrictive gun control laws yet. You ain't seen nothing yet. We'll fill federal prisons with gun nuts. But it's coming now.

21. How well is it working with child porn?

never well enough, but we throw those fuckers in prison and they have to do it under the cover of darkness. It will be the same with the gun printers. Child porn is information, too. You can shut these people down to the extent that you shut any criminal operation down. Gun printing will be criminalized, so your whole "It won't matter" argument is bullshit. You're like a NAMBLA member claiming that prohibitions on child porn will be moot once the internet comes online, since "information wants to be free!" Oh yeah? Here's ten fucking years in federal prison to consider your theory.

23. It is a gun problem and 3D printing technology is right up there with the paperless society.

Yes, it might happen. Someday.

We need to deal with reality as it now exists.

The materials needed to print a firearm might be something that can be controlled. If you make an AR-15 out of plastic it is going to explode the first time you fire it.

It is not late for gun control. Not for the people who will be killed 10 years from now in more mass shootings.

We need to take some meaningful steps and not make idiotic excuses.

26. Most don't get it Paca

Most are overpowered by emotions and illogical reasoning. You're right, it is a human mental problem. Man was killing and mass murdering long before guns. The most people mass murdered was Oklahoma and it was a bomb. Unless we take serious action towards mental disorders this will not stop. Not even without guns. I did a poll here and almost all agreed that the day will never come when all guns will be eradicated. No one in their right mind would feel good in anyway about this event or past ones. Some think that if you understand that it's not the guns then you must be a NRA card holder. That it's your right to have protection for yourself and others makes you an right winger. Nope. Wrong on all accounts.
