(174 posts)the word hit of the shooting. They suggest it wouldn't have happened if the teachers had been armed and carrying. Someone said that the gunman was undoubtedly a "raghead" terrorist. Someone else said it was surely a liberal who did it to make the gun industry look bad. One said (for him) it was the saddest day since November 6. I could go on.....

(10,164 posts)Personally, I think it's a terrible idea (and I have a CCW permit...). For the most part, widespread concealed carry has conspicuously failed to result in the "bullets flying everywhere" scenarios opponents of the practice often predict. But a crowded classroom and a person driven the deeply rooted instinct to protect children isn't a situation in which I'd expect acceptable accuracy. That's because "acceptable accuracy" under those circumstances very possibly means not missing the attacker with even a single round. A person with extremely extensive training and practice (way beyond "cop level" and more like that which Air Marshals receive) would be able to attain that level, since their shooting would be practically a matter of muscle memory. But do educators, who already put in long, tiring hours, have the time it takes to train like that? I can't imagine most do, even if they were so inclined.
