Banning guns will not happen any time soon, but there are things we can push for
I hope to see the Democrats push for a renewal of the assault weapons ban, sale of fully automatic conversion kits and getting rid of the gun show loop holes.
I hope everyone is writing to their congress critters.

1. Like any law, it can be subverted.
|
And like any law, it can still reduce the incidents of gun violence. No law is perfect.

2. I'd like to see a 5 year moratorium on the manufacture of new handguns.
|
Thin the ranks out.

5. The 5 year gun-making moratorium would be win-win for both sides

Last edited Fri Dec 14, 2012, 07:14 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1) Win for gun control advocates because it will reduce the number of guns while also driving up the price of them, perhaps prohibitively for some.
Win for 2nd Amendment advocates because it would make the value of their gun rise. Allow for a government subsidy - or maybe even a government-sponsored retooling of the factories - to float the American manufacturers of these weapons during the moratorium. |

6. How would that thin the ranks in any but the longest term?
|
Firearms are extremely durable goods. I suppose some would be removed via confiscation from criminals, but I doubt that would make much of a dent.

7. There's already 300,000,000 guns in the states. 5 years with no production wouldn't change that.
|
You'd just be taking the jobs of people who work at the production factories.

8. Nope...
|
Not if the Govt subsidized them for that time period. 5 years w/ no production would remove the amount they make in 5 years. I'm sure that's a significant amount.

11. Could put them to

work retro-fitting government buildings to be more Green. That would be cool.
A 5 year ban on production would crush the stock value of publicly traded gun companies, which is why it would never happen. |

12. Not if they were subsidized. Profit would be maintained.

10. "sale of fully automatic conversion kits "
|
There's really nothing like that for sale unless it's a class 3 item
The assault weapons ban accomplished nothing. It was a feel good thing. Make a federal law to keep ALL firearms locked and secured in your home. A stiff penalty if not done and your gun is stolen and used in a crime. There's plenty of common sense laws to pass. The worst thing is when ignorant politicians pass firearm laws. |
