Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

Well I was kind of hanging in there until I saw President Obama cry.

We should all be crying for our children, and the brothers and sisters who have just had an unfathomable loss.

We should not turn on one another. We should try to talk, even as we disagree, with respect and care, and weep together for our little ones lost.

A solemn moment. I am filled with sadness, particularly for all those little children.

4. Yeah, me too.

I just keep thinking about Christmas. Presents under the tree for the dead children. Their holidays will always be associated with tragedy. The country is in shock.

On edit: I notice that wasn't even coherent but it illustrates the mind-numbing shock.

5. I haven't cried in years it seems. Now I can't stop.

This cannot be allowed to be swept under the rug. It is too much.

I don't know the answer, but god damn it, something has to be done.

9. President Obama cried ...

Last edited Fri Dec 14, 2012, 04:11 PM - Edit history (1)

during the presser?

If so, I'm launching a pre-emptive F-U to beck, hannity, limbaugh and everyone else that questions President Obama's manliness, or sincerity, and offer that the display of emotion is normal and acceptable among HUMANS.

Beck fake-cries all the time. Boehner cries, too. Obama cried as a father while comforting the country as POTUS.

28. He visibly had to stop and compose himself more than once,

and he dabbed at the corners of his eyes several times.

"No drama Obama" was deeply moved. He is as empathic as any President I've ever seen.

20. Please let this be the beginning

of a move toward true gun control and gun safety legislation. I know he is sad. Bless him for caring so deeply. Now that we know that he is moved by the deaths of these children, let him back it up with action. If Lincoln can take on slavery, Obama can take on guns.

23. All those little babies. I can't bear to imagine what they went through; not to mention the poor

mother of the shooter. I bet he shot the children first to hurt her more. I have a 4 year old grandson. How horrible that we are afraid for our children to go to school.

26. He's a good man. I caught part of it, and he was wiping the tears away

I have to keep the TV off, as Friday afternoon to Saturday is my time with my 8 y.o. grandson. We're going to see The Hobbit shortly. I'm going to continue to thank the Gods for him, and my heart will break for those other parents and grandparents. But the TV is going to stay off in my house.

I repeat: Barack Obama is a good, good man. I hope we deserve him. I mean it.

31. Just when I think I can't cry anymore, the tears begin to stream down my face again.

Witnessing the unbearable anguish on the faces of the parents is tearing me apart. We must somehow make this world safer for the most tender and innocent amongst us. Those poor little survivors will never be able to forget this horrible tragedy.

33. Today is not the time for the NRA to spew. Hug your kids.

Our thoughts and prayers should go out to the families of the murdered children who lost their lives today because they went to school. Hug your little ones extra hard when they get off of the bus. Kiss them. and tuck them in EXTRA tight tonight......because some parents at Sandy Hook won't ever get to do that again. Guns talks can wait.

35. My son's girlfriend is a Montessori teacher. She is having a rough day.

I understand from him that she's hanging in there, but parents are frightened, kids are picking up on it, she is deeply unsettled and trying to carry on, and it's just miserable.

I'm offering all the support I can, but it's damned awful all over today, I'm sure.

36. I am not a parent

but I can only imagine how much sadness and fear incidents like these cause every parent, not just those directly effected. Their pain must be uninmaginable.

I am not even a by birth aunt, but my second cousin, who is now 27, adopted me as his honorary aunt, and another young man, 30 that is young to a 50 year old, adopted me as his unoffical big sister. I have known them both since they were infants. I know how much it would have hurt and how much it would still hurt, if they were taken from my life in such a senseless fashion.

So bless all of you parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, sisters, and brothers, who grieve during this terrible day, may you find comfort in the children who continue to bless your lives.

Our President has empathy. What a wonderful & rare gift.
Anyone who tries to gain political ground at his rare show of emotion should be boycotted loudly.
