Can anyone give me just one good reason why people need to own semi-automatic weapons?

I think semi-automatic weapons should be banned. Period. There is not one good reason I can think of why anyone needs to have one.

1. There are no reasons, let alone good reasons.

Fucking gun culture.

3. Semi-automatic just means what most of us call "an automatic"

It just means as opposed to a revolver or a gun where each bullet is loaded seperately, like a pump-action gun.

The standard police side-arm used to be the .38 Special. (A Revolver) Today it is a Glock. ("semi-automatic")

In both cases a bullet comes out every time you squeeze the trigger. In the case of the revolver the next bullet is moved into place by squeezing the trigger. With an automatic the next bullet is moved into place by a spring, and/or the force of the previous bullet's explosion. The revolver is typically harder to squeeze unless one has pre-cocked the hammer, and slighly slower between shots

The great majority of guns on Earth today that are not machine guns (aka fully automatic) are "semi-automatic."

The use of that scary sounding term does not really advance the debate in a useful way. Gun savvy people hear it as an excuse to dismiss their opponants as totally ignorant about guns.

5. Probably none -- pump and lever action are nearly as fast for aimed fire.

10. Yes a bolt action and repeating rifle can be fired quickly

but what is the allure of semi-automatics?

12. It's just another type of design

Advancement in technology.

I belong to a couple of gun clubs. When I go to the range I mostly like to fire my black powder collection and my bolt actions.

It's like asking why some one prefers a fast sports car versus a 4 wheel drive truck 6 cylinder truck

Their particular style of shooting is geared to more rapid fire .

7. Those who think they need them feel powerless.

So they buy toys and eventually grow desperate & angry enough employ them.

They really shouldn't be so readily available.

Healings to the kids and their families.

8. Because...

Historically societies that grant a monopoly on the use of force tend to end badly.

We're not going to put this particular genie back into the bottle, there are more guns in the US than people.

CT has an assault weapons ban, banning features isn't the answer.

If there is an answer it involves social change such that sick individuals like this get whatever it is they need to be healthy.

14. Another good reason to ban them.

I'm sick and tired of all the damned gun violence in this country.

11. Because there's no good reason to single them out for banning.

Non automatic guns (especially handguns) can be fired nearly as fast as a semi-automatic. There are advantages in hunting to owning a semi as some of the energy that would contribute to the recoil felt is used to reload.

There simply isn't much to be gained by singling them out as a class for banning.

13. A more practical reduction in the amount and rate of fire would be to limit capacity to 6 rounds.

There are essentially no situations where a civilian needs a larger magazine.

A hunter's objective is always to get a clean kill with the first shot.

The same is true for snipers and hit men, such as the killing on the street in NYC a couple of days ago.
