Residents in Orange Co. housing complex upset over holiday decorations

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — People in an Orange County public housing complex say they’re living around a modern-day scrooge.

At Orlando Housing Authority’s Villas at Carver Park, people put decorations on their doors and a few lights in the lobby. They also put up a Christmas tree, only to be told last week it had to go.

Residents said they had to move the tree into a corner of the sitting room, a room without decorations, and a room residents rarely use.

“I said, ‘Where’s the tree?’ They said, ‘We had to hide it.’ I said, ‘Why?’ They said, ‘We were told we couldn’t, because it was offending someone,’” said resident Beverly Albert North.

...

Residents also said they’ve been told they can’t have a Christmas or holiday party. They said they’d have to call it an “End of the Year” party.

2. Among these folks are those who would dictate what we can and can't do...

in the privacy of our own bedrooms. But they'll never get that.

4. Communal living often comes with restrictions that seem tedious to many/most

residents, but they are what they are.

In order to avoid being tagged as "partial" to a particular religion/agenda/issue/philosophy, the "solution" is often to be totally "bland".

It may be called "PC", or "socially conscious", or whatever..but if there are people of many faiths living in a residential complex, having an "End of the Year" party may be a work-around that allows people to all get together in the commons area, and still decorate their own apartments with whatever holiday they celebrate.

Societies often make accommodations for each others' sensitivities.

School holidays used to be Xmas Break..Easter Break...and then it morphed into Winter Break & Spring Break.

Perhaps before we all "knew better", Nativity Scenes at City Hall and religious music playing everywhere were just accepted, but we have evolved into a society that recognizes that everyone is NOT a Christian...and that many people are "left out" when ONE faith is represented, and all others are made less-of.

5. Perhaps if someone wore a pic of a christmas (oops holiday) tree on their shirt

and stood there it would be ok?

I rue the day when people don't celebrate things which bring them joy out of fear of offending me.

Would like to think I am strong enough to take such hideous and evil displays, but then maybe I would run screaming and lock myself in my room until it was all over....

cultures, I embrace them.
