Republicans reap the fruits of redistricting

Republicans reap the fruits of redistricting

By Will Femia

The graphics in last night's opening segment on gerrymandering were so clear and illustrative I wanted to give you a second look. What these show is the total number of votes for Democratic and Republican House candidates in each state. Or, as Rachel put it, more people in Michigan voted for a Democrat than voted for a Republican. But the point of gerrymandering is that more people voting for a Democratic representative does not mean more Democratic representatives were elected to represent those voters. In fact, the opposite. And in cases where more voters chose Republicans, the apportionment of representatives for those voters is disproportionate.

1. this is very depressing

that we have to live with this for another 8 yrs? We really need to focus on the 2020 state elections to try to undo this travesty. At least it will be a general election that year, and not a mid-year!

2. A lesson learned too late.

I voted in 2010.

Maybe when people see their rights being eroded, they'll work on reversing this travesty sooner rather than later.

4. Hopefully, they will gerrymander their way out of existence.

Question is, will they also take the rest of the country with them?

When they do lose control...and they surely will as they drive more and more sensible people away when their policies actually start hitting home, the backlash will intense. Democrats will be obligated to use the same tactics to create filibuster-proof majorities to keep these anti-Americans from doing any further damage to this country.

6. Democrats are to blame for much of this.

Had they voted in 2010, we would not have this problem.

7. Gerrymandering on steriods. How screwed that states that went to Obama have GOP

majorities in the state legislatures.

Yes enjoying the fruits of their handywork - rotten fruit.

8. Yup!

The 2010 election distorted reality in that state, giving the win to the Koch brothers.
