Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

Okay. Seriously. Guns are not cars. Let's just get that straight now.

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Stinky The Clown (a host of the General Discussion forum).

One is an object that is designed to kill, the other is an object that may incidentially kill, typically accidentially.

I know this thread will likely either be locked or sent to the Gungeon, but this needs to be said now.

20. You know, the way I play tennis it could be lethal

Love your point. Hope you don't my attempt at humor.

I don't really get the point of the original post. I think most reasonable people understand the difference between a device designed and intended to kill and a device that can be used negligently and have the awful effect of killing when it was not intentional. I doubt most people who cause car accidents that kill even if they were drunken asses at the time are not remorseful and feel a lot of guilt.

On the other hand I doubt shooters like the Aurora, CO guy or this most recent Oregon guy feel any remorse or guilt. We may all be humans but we don't all have what's called a soul.

2. Nor are they Swimming Pools.

Nor is anyone seriously proposing "banning all guns". Its absurd and impossible.

2nd Amendment Sophistry, designed to derail any "conversation" about firearms and the havoc they wreak with Gish Gallop logical fallacies.

7. Because people like you would probably ignore it.

Call me a "gun grabber" and a "prohibitionist", and mock me for not knowing the differnce between Gun A and Gun B.

Glad I caught your attention here.

10. Maybe because people concerned about gun violence feel the

issue needs to be discussed openly as it effects all of us, not just those who frequent the gun forum.

4. Actually, you're wrong

A gun is a magical talisman, forged by the hand of Saint Heston. its presence in the home, car, or on the person wards the carrier of harm from thugs, miscreants, home invaders, burglars, and marching troupes of sidhe. If everyone carried these magical, wonderful items, society would improve greatly and all would harmonize into a polite, strife-free civilization. They can shoot, but that's an incidental function, intended to put holes in paper and nothing more, which is why Office Depot needs to start selling them (also, nobody wants the Fair Folk marching through their cubicle farm)

15. Actually, cars are probably more useful than guns for that.

Driving away is almost always a better idea than getting into a gun fight.

17. Not in quote unquote "the right cirumstances"

Which are similar to the "right circumstances" under which a car can be intentionally used to kill a mall full of innocent people.

If the NRA can make ludicrous equivocations, then so can I.

9. Poor analogies are essential to the NRA ideology.

Right up there with the made-up statistics and the paranoia. Without these building blocks, there would be no gun nuttery

18. Looks like your post was cut short.

The point you were trying to make (in paragraph #3) is missing along with the supporting argument in paragraphs #4-10.
