Why do citizens need assault weapons (rifles) period?

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Stinky The Clown (a host of the General Discussion forum).

This is bullshit nobody hunts with assault rifles so don't even go there. Someone tell us a good reason a citizen should have them. I'm so sick of these senseless massacres

13. JFK was shot with a bolt-action, single-shot Italian military rifle.

3 shots, 1 victim; integrated magazine loaded with five-round clips; gun was available through mail order without a background check or anything.

An assault rifle is a firearm designed for military use with a large capacity magazine (anywhere from 10 to 30 or more rounds - up to 100 or more in the case of the Colorado shooter) and semi-automatic capability, meaning the user's firing rate is as fast as he can pull the trigger. Many assault rifles were manufactured with "full-auto" capability, meaning with one pull of the trigger, the user can fire as many rounds as are in the magazine. The old M-16, and M-16A1 had this feature. The M-16A2 changed it to a "burst" capability, meaning a single pull of the trigger would fire a three-round burst.

Many assault rifles sold on the open market for non-military uses have only semi-auto firing capability, but can be modified with varying degrees of difficulty to fire full-auto.

These and other firearms are available for purchase without a background check of any kind at gun shows across the nation.

6. No such thing exists.

The old Assault Weapons Ban made them up and defined them as rifles with certain deadly features. Only problem is all the features were cosmetic or ergonomic features. Not features that affect how powerful the gun is. The fact is an AR15 is no different than any other rifle. Theyre not automatic. Just regular rifles.

Oh and there a quite a few people who use special ARs for hunting.

Inb4 these actual facts are ridiculed as "NRA talking points" or "pointless semantics"

14. Not true.

The definition of an assault rifle includes a large capacity magazine and the capability of firing semi-automatically, meaning the firing rate is as fast as the user can pull the trigger. Most hunting rifles have either a single shot capability, or require shooting the manual bolt in order to reload the chamber from what is almost always a low-capacity magazine, 5-10 rounds. More capability than this, a competent hunter does not need.

The assault rifle specifications date to the mid-1940's when the German Wehrmacht needed a simple, effective weapon with a high rate of fire to replace the old bolt-action rifle they had been using up to that point. Research revealed (and the U.S. Army did similar research with similar results) that the average infantryman rarely fired his rifle in combat. An increase in small-arms fire by the rank-and-file infantryman was judged to be predicated on having a high-capacity semi-automatic weapon available. The assault rifle they developed in response is viewed as the common ancestor of both the Russian AK family, and the American Stoner-designed M-16/AR-15 family.

16. An assault weapon with a 5 round mag is just another semi-auto hunting rifle

It is my belief that many who are against the so-called assault weapons are mostly concerned about magazine capacity.
