I am in NYC for a few weeks and have seen so many of them that my eyes hurt.

I cannot fathom how they get their feet thru those pipestem jeans.

But, hey, I'm a farmer.

Is Sarah Palin an Ironic Hipster?

Estimated cost of Cindy McCain’s wardrobe at the Republican National Convention: $300,000.00.

Amount of money actually spent to clothe Empress Governor Palin for 3 months: $150,000.00. See Footnote

Amount of money John McCain paid for getting made-up by a Hollywood professional: $5,500.00.

Not realizing that you paid for and wore a scarf that was made to support your opponents? Priceless.

A hipster is a fashionable/unfashionable, cool/nerdy, anti-corporate/pro-Apple person around 18/30 years old, with a liberal arts/maths/science degree who follows/starts trends, wears Nike/Keds/Converse sneakers and...stuff like that.

Hope that helps.

I have a daughter who is a hipster (ray bans, skinny jeans or jorts, loose knit caps, lives in SF), and a son who disparages everything hipster, particularly fixed-gear bicycles.

i was called a midwestern hipster when i moved to seattle in the grunge era 20 years ago - meaning i wore vintage coats. but mostly i was just poor.

Or to the left of the party, which isn't that hard, frankly.

64. ...and worldview.

Hipster culture is very much about irony and camp. In some sense, it's about the rejection of commercialized culture in pursuit of the "real"; even when the "real" is really mediocre, perhaps especially when the "real" is mediocre.

"Isn't this shirt tacky and awful, I have to have it."
"That band we saw last week is so over. They sold out, I just heard their song in a commercial."
"We're going to see _________ tonight in some abandoned warehouse, they totally suck. It's going to be awesome."

Would you ever drink PBR expressly because it's crap? Watch bad movies because they're bad? Wholesale reject popular culture in favor of an alt anti-culture?

My hipster brother has taken to wearing gaudy-colored tux jackets with his jeans, listening to Nick Drake records, has grown a scraggly beard that he doesn't comb. He has put a lot of effort and money into looking/sounding like some sort of reject.

21. Hipster now

are today's cool, urban white people. Or maybe they were yesterday's cool, urban white people, because they've been around for a while and coolness doesn't last forever. Genus Hipsterus NewYorkus is indigent to Brooklyn but loss of habitat is always a problem for hipsters and they could be forced to migrate at any time. Should you want to trap and tag one of these there are a couple of things to know: They gather at Starbucks. They dress for irony. They look disaffected, alienated and if possible as though they have an eating disorder and/or a drug problem. They are currently writing something but are as yet unpublished. Same goes for other art forms. They often have trust funds. They have iPads, of course. They like things before you ever heard of them. Once you've heard of it, it's over.

Once non-starbucks places started opening up there has probably been a switch. But starbucks, if only for the free wifi, if in a hipster neighborhood, was a place where they did go. That's here. Seattle probably always had more choices. I guess there might be non-white hipsters here, but once they're hipsters they all seem white to me.

26. Back in my day, the fifties and sixties, hipsters were jazz and blues musicians and

people who loved jazz and blues. I like jazz but I wasn't into the hipster culture so to speak. When I was in high school, a girlfriend of mine who had a jazz musician boyfriend, were able to get into the jazz clubs in Hollywood even though we were under age because that musician was fairly well known and had put out albums. I won't say who he was because in this day he would be considered a statutory rapist even though the relationship was consensual. Said friend turned out to be a groupie and there were several musicians after that even when she became of age. I even wonder if he knew her age. We always said we were twenty-one even though we didn't have the ID to prove it.

29. According to Know Your Meme:

“Hipster” is a media stereotype commonly associated with young middle-class adults who share certain interests or values in alternative cultures, mainly independent label music, film and art. Today, the term is predominantly used as a pejorative label to describe someone who outwardly seeks nonconformity through niche consumerism and boycott against mainstream culture.

33. It has become a marketing term

Not a new phenomenon, either: back in the 60's, we freaks were re-named hippies so as to sell stuff to people.

Similar with the Beats, and Loki-only-knows what other groups throughout modern history.

When Madison Avenue gets ahold of a noun, it's all downhill from there.

35. Here's a pretty good definition

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=hipster&defid=2705928

To me the most defining characteristic is a rejection of the mainstream.

Hipster being "trendy" is to me actually ironically anti-hipster - in that trendy becomes mainstream pretty fast. This is true of any counter-culture movement as elements of the movement are adopted by the mainstream.

I had elements of hipster when I was younger but I was just being a mod influenced punk. Embracing retro stuff is very hipster.

92. Hipsterism fetishizes the authentic elements of all of the fringe movements of the postwar era

Christian Lorentzen of Time Out New York argues that "hipsterism fetishizes the authentic" elements of all of the "fringe movements of the postwar era—beat, hippie, punk, even grunge," and draws on the "cultural stores of every unmelted ethnicity," and "regurgitates it with a winking inauthenticity."

67. Hipster, Scene, Emo, Goth...

they are all sewn from the same cloth, but hipsters are the snobs you make fun of at the hip espresso bar, working on their screen play. They are the ones who only shop at thrift stores, not because they are poor (some of the used clothes can be quite expensive), but because they have to be the only one wearing that shirt. They stop listening to bands that become popular, because they "sell out", or in other words, other people know who the band is. They are the ones who believe the world can be fed with a vegan, organic diet, but can't explain how. They are pretty much metro-rebels who try too hard.

102. The generation whose parents were the original American Bohemians. The On The Road cohort

wore news-boy caps and shades and non-descript worn, possibly somewhat dirty, preppie jacket, shirts, and slacks, on males and dark colored, ballet-neckline, sheaths and smooth hair close to the skull on women, dark-red lips and nails, hung out at hole in the wall Jazz clubs on either coast until 3am chain-smoking, drinking, be-capped & sunglassed, nodding as they listened to the likes of John Coltrane and Thelonius Monk. Acolytes of Paul Goodman and William S. Burroughs and Hunter S. Thompson, not that talkative unless on bennys, voracious readers, into theater, not sports, late sleepers, night owls, bad nutritional habits.

109. Hipsters.

I was part of the movement that spawned "hipsters", but moved on before it was a "thing". I found the desperation and ultimate failure of being an "individual" and "important" annoying and somewhat futile. By and large, these people take themselves entirely too seriously. It seems to me a movement inspired by the rise of social media and the fall of Western importance in the world. Most hipsters I've known seem to be grappling with the reality of becoming adults, the awareness that they may not be destined for "great" things (i.e. celebrity, wealth) and the lack of understanding that "good" and "important" lives can be lived nonetheless. Faced with their own mediocrity, they choose to drop out and become legends in their own minds, focusing their efforts on being "first" at the latest trends and impressing their peers. Sort of like high school and college forever...and ever...and ever.

That's my oversimplified take, anyway.
