Add Menards to the list of stores to boycott

Just heard on local radio Menards has canceled plans to build a new store in Independence, MO because they're uncertain about Obamacare and its impact on their financial health.

I Googled but didn't find anything but articles about the planned expansion which was announced Nov. 28.

Menards is a big box home improvement chain. Not sure how many stores they have.

1. I wonder if they know how much single payer would help their bottom line.

I'd be screaming for it if I had employees.

2. We've been boycotting Menard's for several years.

John Menard is a right wing asshole and worthy of a boycott. Menard's is huge in the mid-west and Wisconsin for sure.

3. Another Lame Excuse...

A couple years ago Menards wanted to build on large lot in a neighboring town. They tried to bribe the town council and then ran a slate of their own candidates...who lost. The parcel...which Menards still owns...remains vacant and a source of pride to many in the area that we stood up to a big box bully.

They probably want lots of tax breaks and aren't getting them. It's more "diplomatic" to blame Obamacare than ruffle feathers you're still trying to buy off...

4. Oh we have a bright new shiny Menards!

They built it right across the street from our mega huge Lowes. A mile down the street from our large Home Depot. *sigh*

Never been in there, hate their advertising and think they should have thought about locating in a part of town not serviced by a store like this already. I guess trashing up the already mega trashed *Wanamaker shoppers, eaters, consumers paradise* is probably not as bad as trashing up another part of town but really, across the street from Lowes? LOL.

I am not certain anyone needs another store like this though. One or two of the three here is likely to lose enough business to leave and then we will have one more enormous empty, crumbling building.

14. They do that here too

We have several places where Lowes and Home Depot are within a mile of each other. In Shawnee they're across the street from each other.

Right wing marketing. LOL

5. I love how these businesses act like it's such a GIFT to the

community to open one of their ugly big-boxes or crap-food franchises and employ a few dozen at 7-8 bucks an hour. I guess the people of Independence, MO should just be wailing and raising their fists to the gods and screaming, "WHYYYYY!!! CURSE YOU, OBAMA!!11!!!"

8. That's the thing, isn't it?

They need US. We really don't need them. As you say, it's not like they are a good employer offering great jobs and improving the community. Screw them and keep talking, you asses. We consumers have other choices.

6. We have a locally owned Ace Hardware store

where they have all kinds of helpful people and where you can get in and out in 5 minutes.

Why would I shop at a big box?

15. There used to be four locally owned hardware stores in the local small town.

Now, we have Lowe's and Menard's right damned next to each other, and right across the street from Walmart and Meiers.

There is one hardware store left which has the fierce loyalty of the local farmers but the is not one grocery store remaining. Before Meiers came to town, Walmart was the only grocer in a town of 10,000 (plus university students). There used to be four grocers, now only two big box grocers.

Then, there's State Street Hardware toughing it out against Lowes and Menard's.

I always go to the Ace hardware first. if they don't have what I'm looking for, I'll begrudgingly hit up the Lowes.

9. Here's a link to the story.

http://www.examiner.net/news/x719504099/Menards-expansion-to-Independence-on-hold-for-now

“I’m very sorry, but we are a family-owned business and with the Obama administration scaring the dickens out of all small businesses in the USA at present, we have decided not to risk expansion until things are more settled,” Menards spokesman Jeff Abbott said in an email Friday. “Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

Published reports also indicate that plans for a Menards site in O’Fallon, Mo., also are being shelved.

"Small" business??!! Really? I just did a quick google search and they have more than 250 big box stores and employ 45000 people!!!

It's on non stop here and we don't even have any Menards stores!! We were going to get one but now we aren't. So I hope they'll take their commercials off our area stations.

so those commercials air over and over again on all media. I rarely go into one.

"You will go crazy, you will go crazy

Nothing's in stock and nothing ever comes in!
Shopping there will send you right to the looney bin.

You will go crazy, you will go crazy

28. He's a big RW dbag. WI's biggest Walker cheerleader.

John Menard Jr is infamous for treating workers like crap and supporting RW anti-union hate groups.

If you live in the Midwest and you're working on a home-improvement project, you're as likely to do your shopping at a Menards store as at a Lowe's or Home Depot. With 270 stores and 40,000 employees , Menards is the third-largest home-improvement chain in the U.S., and one of the largest privately held corporations in the country. But Menards stores sell more than just lumber and building supplies; their employees are sold a bill of goods in the form of right-wing ideology.

This January, as the Iowa Caucuses were underway, Menards began encouraging employees to take an at-home online "civics" course that characterizes the economic policies of President Barack Obama as a threat to the success of businesses such as Menards, and by extension, to the employees' own well-being.
