Some skullduggery going on at my apartment.

I left to run some errands, and my key would't fit. It's the same key as always. It was hard to get in the slot all the way and hard to get out. It looks like somene was juking around the slot with something, but that could just be me.

The landlord is going to replace it. I use a door bar under the knob so if anybody gets it open, they ain't getting in without waking gawd and everybody. I will be waiting with my baseball bat.

Not happy!

2. Did you report this to the local police? If not, please do....

...they may have similar reports of attempted break-ins in your area.

11. Called them

The officer was very nice. He will have somebody swing through here more especially with holidays.
He said this area was very calm now. Hmmmmm.

14. They're actually sending someone OUT on your call????

Good god, where do you live?

Here, the LAPD would just say, "So what do you want us to do about it?" and not-so-politely decline to come out.

Unless there's a body, they don't much care about dealing with crime other than keeping statistics on it.

17. Small town SC

Obviously not too busy, but they were probably hoping for something to do.
There can be some nasty crap, but not on LAs level.

Usually it involves our elected officials being miscreants.

3. I love the use of the words 'skullduggery' and 'juked'.

I have prior experience in this sort of thing, I will send a quick pm describing what I did to stop it.

5. Yikes

When I was robbed, they came in through the window with the fire escape and carried what they wanted out the front door.

I hope you don't need your baseball bat!

6. I have some major bookcases in front of my sliding glass doors.

They will make more noise than Krakatoa if they try to get in.

8. I hope they are short bookcases.

I love the view out my sliding glass doors. Hate the heat loss.

Do you have a dog?

10. Cats

They lurk around and find plenty of places from which to survey their kingdom.

12. Cats will let you know if someone is trying to get in.

Parrots are quick to scream an alert.

You'll sleep better if your pets are nearby.

13. go get golf clubs from a resale sports store

lighter, more force with a swing more painful connection, go for the knees then upper body. A bat is a backup. There are window screamers you can peel and stick on the frame and glass, they make so much noise that a neighbor will look and call the police when you're not there. Place security company signs on the window and doors, if you have basement windows, there are rebar type rods you can install from the inside, 2 to 3 for a window so the thief cannot kick it in and enter, but you can open the vent for air if you need it.
Obvious blocks will slow down a thief so they will go for an easier target.

15. Cheap locks are generally pretty easy to pick

I have a set of lock picks and sometimes I demonstrate to the folks I work with just how easy it is to pick certain types of locks. If someone uses a set of lock picks and knows what they are doing, you'd never know it, however there are other ways to defeat locks which can damage them. If someone does know what they are doing and doesn't care about damaging the lock, drilling is one of the fastest and easiest ways to defeat cheap locks. It sounds like if someone did try to mess with your lock, they probably didn't know what they were doing.

18. I hope all your precautions are

very effective. Do follow the advice to get a very good lock.

However, I personally use another form of burglar-proofing. My housekeeping is such that any potential burglar who got inside would just look around and say, "Damn! Someone else was just here!" and leave.

I once told some cops that at a neighborhood watch and they laughed and said, "Who knows? It might work."

On a more serious and practical note, I hope that the lack of a TV of any kind would make them immediately assume I have nothing worth taking. A determined thief might find the small amount of jewelry I have, which would be annoying. I doubt a thief will cart off my wedding china or the Waterford crystal I have. I keep on hearing that such people are generally looking for things that are fairly easy to take out and sell, and anyone getting into my place would not easily see anything like that.

On the other hand, I do know of a couple of cases where the intruder knew exactly where to look for large sums of cash, so if you have anything like that move it to a new location.
