Should Obama blackmail the UN into letting the United States reclassify cannabis?

As we all know, the United Nations is on American soil and received a lot of money from the United States. So in theory, there's nothing stopping the U.S. from saying "no land and no money till we get our way on this"...And why not? The U.N. position on cannabis is undemocratic and immoral. Moreover, it should be insulting to all freedom-loving people and all supporters of democracy that drug policy is being held hostage by unelected, unaccountable bureaucratic.

Yes. But be more concilliatory.

No. Placing the democratic will of the American people above Interntional Law on a NON-HUMAN RIGHTS ISSUE sets a bad precedent.

1. Please. Leave and learn at least a bit about the history of what you're talking about.

Then, you can come back and ask questions that make some sense.

4. Why are you blaming the UN? They are just following the country that decides drug policy...

for the world: The USA.

6. Who says this is a NON- HUMAN RIGHTS ISSUE? Since when did the UN determine US law?

And just how do you know this? Do you have supporting links?

7. The U.S. does not have to threaten the UN to reclassify marijuana...

The UN is no enforcement mechanism if the US chooses to reclassify or even decriminalize marijuana.

Like many international treaties, the Single Convention does not have any strong mechanism for enforcement, and other signatory countries have endured similar warnings without consequence. Canada, for example, was warned by the INCB in 2008 after it launched its “safe injection sites,” but it has since continued operating the sites and even looked to expand the program.
