(Rant) My boss called today.... wants me to train 7 new workers for my bus route.

No problem.. (I'm a team player) except I have been cut to two days a week.

So he wants me to train 7 new workers at $7 an hour... when I am only working two days a week for $10 an hour?

Yup.. that's what he wants. When I started the job, I used my own personal car and my own gas and my own time ...and I went out and learned the bus routes on my own.. no one "trained" me?

Last June I trained 5 new workers.. and they are all working more hours than me. So I am going to say "No" this time around. Yes.. I was screwed over before.. so I should do this again to save the company $3 an hour?

The new workers are all Haitain Immigrants and Mexican. Nothing against the Haitain folks and the Mexican workers.. (I assume they have their green cards).. but I need 40 hours a week... I have a family too.

I'm in a right to work state..(Florida) OF COURSE, no union allowed.

Fucking Republican , Supply Side, Tea Bag, scum-Sucking Conservatives and their hypocrisy... I cant take much more. I have already gone over the fiscal cliff..

It feels better (for a little while) when you talk about it.

These companies are doing this because THEY CAN. They know they have backing in Washington D.C.

I wish we had ten more Elizabeth Warrens and Alan Graysons.

I just had an idea.. I might call or write Alan Grayson in January. My company does business in his district.. maybe he will have something to say about this?

It's not like you're saving yourself a great paying job! I hope your boss realizes he's gone too far and he starts giving you the hours and pay that you need.

He won't treat the Haitians and the Mexicans any better. He may even treat them worse.

quit the job on the spot. I use to believe in giving your proper notice but living in a right to work state I see things don't work the same way. You owe them nothing. I think he is probably going to get rid of you sooner than later when he is hiring people that come over. Like you I have nothing against them the owners are pitting these people against american born. We can't get ourselves in the trap.

I know it's easy for me to tell you this, but you really should be looking for a new job. I have no idea what your personal financial or health situation is, but you ought to be able to get a job that, even if it pays the same at the hourly rate, will give you more hours.

I was hoping to last thru the holidays because Christmas is a terrible time to look for a job.

Most offices have basically "Shut down" until after New Years and no one is willing to take apps, let alone talk to you.

Its a race-to-the-bottom... and it is a crying shame what they are doing to working people in America.

The Koch Bros have been successful installing their governors and shutting down any union activity. Unless the workers get together and get out in the streets.. I don't see anything changing.

years ago. Where I worked did not have a Union but I was asked to train a girl who was related to someone so that in turn she could become MY BOSS!!!!!!!!!!! I refused. Fortunately they did not fire me.

55. The attitude that this time of year is not good to look for a job

is so ingrained in people that this just means there are fewer people competing with you in December. If a company needs to hire someone, they will hire in December as well as January.....and think about all the people with New Years resolutions to get out of their sucky jobs. Start now.

You do realize that refusing to train these workers will possibly be the same as quitting then and there, don't you? You have to be prepared that they will not look kindly on your refusal. If you are prepared for that, go for it.

Suddenly you're about to lose your job & your choice is to lose it with a cushion or without.

The state of labor in this country is very sad. Management (the 1%) has effectively pitted us against each other as corporate profits soar & our paychecks/benefits deflate.

Byron Dorgan, former dem senator from ND, stated in his book, "Take This Job & Ship It" that if minimum wage had kept up with CEO pay from the early 90s it would be over $23 an hour. The book was published in 2004.

seven more lower-wage people are trained on your route. Do you get health care and pension benefits? Probably not at only two days a week even if you used to get them. Will they be getting those? Probably not. I'd bet they're all classified as "part-time."

And, no, they won't complain or file grievances with the NLRB unless some "Norma Ray" type person appears on the scene.

If you are not in a Union, get one to train you anyways on talking points.


Play it for all it's worth - no health, no benefits, further reduction in hours just before the festive season, training your replacement; i.e. hit the management with every talking point you can trot out. Make them feel the heat for a change.

If you only have two days at ten dollars an hour, you could make that cleaning houses and more and be your own boss.

My suggestion is you contact the Teamsters (not necessarily to organize) but for information from them on how to take a stand.

from a public-sector employer.

Reason I ask is if this private company operates under some sort of contract with a public agency, it may be subject to pressure from that direction.

An important question to ask if this is a private company operating under contract to the government: how was its contract awarded???

Still a bit hazy on the details here.

I trained unqualified people to take over my job. I didn't realize it at the time, because it seemed completely incongruous for the work I was doing, but they took it over, ignoring the selling points and nuances people like me brought to the work. They don't care for quality; quantity is Job 1.

And what's a customer to do, with limited, rote information? Sit on the phone for hours. Who cares? Fuck them, they buy our product, they keep the company profitable, they must be stupid.

This will all come back on them.

35. I don't understand how the foreign guest worker contracters get around the rules.

Those jobs are supposed to be offered to American citizens first.

Must be why the states don't want to raise the minimum wage. They have to pay guest workers the minimum wage. Many foreign guest workers come from countries where 7 an hour is a fortune.

Sounds like your treatment at your job is very unfair. I don't know what the solution could be. If they make the minimum wage only for American citizens, I bet guest workers would work for much less. The mexican border businesses pay 7 a day and people line up for those jobs.

America brings in thousands of foreign guest workers, many work in contracted federal departments like the forrest service.

Florida has one of the highest unemploment and under employed records. It is just not right that American citizens are exploited like you are.

Not long ago DU was all for this. Now it seems the thought process is changing. I came in a thread here complaining about how my construction job was in jeopardy because of all the Haitain folks and the Mexican's taking over. I was told to get a better education and give up my job to them and move on. After all they are just trying to support their family's. Bullshit.

let them call a tow truck. Flat tires work too. Deliberately give the new drivers false information and just say they don't understand English. Driving really slow and wasting time works too. In other words sabotage the bus company.

bus route in two days. Look at what happened in the I-95 crash with 15 dead. The company is out of business. No one has jobs. And civil suits are going to start. I just cannot do it. I don't want to lose my license, or job.

The day Regan fired all of the Air Traffic Controllers we should have shut down America walk off the job until they all brought back. I carry a IBEW card 30 years ago if material was sent to a job that did not have a union label it would sit till it rot. Today we all use that crap! Why because if you do not some scab will be in line for your job in a heat beat.

Sorry man but I think the fight was lost long ago. Unless the red necks in the south wake up the whole county will be working for $8.00 per hour

i remember the eighties very well and how the media sold the american people a bill of good. back then it was the industrious japanese, and we were just lazy americans. what the media never wants you to see is the working conditions in some of the european countries. but, we the people, bought it. oh, and the new business model, no longer will there be loyalty to a company where there is an agreement between worker and company for benefits, pensions. no, you're free to look for better jobs, and american workers will be in demand-the corporations will be hiring americans by the millions. it was all sold in the eighties-we are and have been suckers.

about a hundred years ago, miners rebelled because of low pay and unsafe working conditions. men, women and children were murdered; but wealthy owned newspapers mostly blamed the workers, not the owners. today, we've got these RW rags complaining how much certain workers make, how much benefits they receive as if they are attempting to pit those who have shitty jobs or two or more shitty jobs against those who still have decent jobs. instead of looking who has really caused the demise in labor, they pit labor against each other. until we all wake up and realize that we'll all be working for impoverished rates while the fatcats make even more obscene profits at our expense, this country and its' people are are going to financially suffer. because without decent jobs, we cannot contribute to the greater good of our country, like rebuilding infrastructure, supporting higher education and helping those in our community who are in need. global corporations sure in the hell ain't going to be aiding this country, they'd rather just buy our resources (the commons) cheaply and exploit so they can make a maximum profit off of us. they could give a shite if this country goes down or if they pollute our water supply (poisoning us) or sell us crappy products, as long as they make a buck.

it's the people in this country who care about what happens to our fellow citizens and to our country. that's why all americans should be screaming from the rooftops demanding decent paying jobs.

I swear if I hear one more pundit go on about how bad it will be if America goes over the fiscal cliff, I'm going to throw something through my screen. America is not going over a cliff. Yet they are silent on the millions of Americans who have already gone over that cliff.

I am so sick of the current situation & I feel so powerless to make any real change.

Basically been where you are, lib2DaBone (admittedly in a large multinational corp, but it's the same line of thinking across the board).

Training them as best you can - for their sakes, not your company's, would be the "right" thing to do. They're human beings, and probably need the job badly. But yes, you are being screwed over here. I'd completely understand it if you just think "fuck it".

Some way to better your situation?

Even if you tell your boss, nicely, that you feel this is unfair, I doubt that will change things. Things are the way they are. It's his business.

Best if you move on, if you can find another job. OTOH, if you're in school, learning a trade, you may be stuck with teh job you have, if it lets you shift your schedule around to fit your school. BUT PLAN IT OUT. Don't just complain to your boss. That just flags you as a complainer, and he'll be thinking about replacing you with a non-complainer. MAKE YOUR PLANS, and then act on them. Like leave in 6 months, or find another job reasonably soon.

If you have a family, you need more than $10/hr, even if you get 40 hrs a week. The only way to do that is to get a skill, change companies, or something like that.

Otherwise you might be liable for training unqualified drivers. Also verify that they have the appropriate endorsement for your type of bus - P or S.

64. I'd tell your boss that the trainees are welcome to ride your bus. As passengers.

They can pull themselves up from their own bootstraps - if we're using Republican mentality. A teenager could probably learn the whole darned bus network in a couple of weeks as a passenger, basically by using a timetable, a map, and noting the timings the driver is using to get from stop to stop. Plus that teenager would have to pay busfare. Btw, I was that teenager. If these guys have to learn a route and only a single route they can do it in a day. Just by riding the bus.

And this $10/hour pay business? 2 days a week? I knew relief drivers who worked just the morning school runs who made that in pounds sterling an hour. In 1989. London bus drivers make about $50k a year on double-deckers working a 38 hour week with no overtime.

Of course, if these trainees need extra time to learn the route, make yourself available to your boss for operating the route.

Plus I view public transit as the "original social network". Good bus drivers run their the route on time. Great bus drivers knew their passengers, their passengers knew them, the drivers went out of their way to help those with mobility issues get on and off the bus, wondered why a certain regular passenger wasn't on the bus and asked after them... and of course ran the route on time. It is this human connection, the personal intellectual property, this just disappears when a traffic manager changes the hours of a driver or assigns them to a different route. The replacement driver has to learn this all over again. Plus those passengers are more likely to ask why a particular driver isn't on that route anymore.

So those newhires who want to learn the route can. As a passenger. It isn't difficult at all for one bus route. Slightly harder but not much so for a driver who drives multiple routes a day. And not hard to learn an entire bus network for a medium sized outfit. However major cities would take me longer (but I could do it if I wanted to!)
