Santa, a West Highland White Terrier that came to the Nebraska Humane Society as a stray, would vomit and choke every time it ate. An X-ray revealed a pork chop bone lodged in his throat. Surgery removed the bone, and the dog will be fine.
A West Highland white terrier named Santa is headed to a new home after his life was saved by a veterinarian and the staff of the Nebraska Humane Society.
The 7-year-old dog came in as a stray last week. Every time he tried to eat, he choked and couldn't keep the food down, said Pam Wiese, a spokeswoman for the shelter.
An X-ray found a pretty large piece of pork chop bone lodged in the dog's throat and poking into his esophagus, Wiese said. The bone would've killed the dog named by the staff in honor of the Christmas season had it not been surgically removed Saturday.
It's a surprisingly regular thing to find unusual food and objects lodged inside of animals, Dr. Kristin Engel, a shelter veterinarian, said. They eat something they shouldn't and then can't pass it along.
