Public coming out to learn about "radical & dangerous" education bills in Michigan

A full crowd of parents, residents, school officials and community leaders came out to Coolidge Intermediate School on Thursday evening to find out about pending legislation that would change the public education system in Michigan... currently being deliberated in the State House and Senate, including Senate Bill 1358, House Bill 6004, and House Bill 5923.

The meeting in Ferndale was one of many Oakland Schools Superintendent Dr. Vickie Markavitch has been participating in across the county. She said she wants to see "a million voices" be heard in Lansing about the bills, which she has called "radical and dangerous..."

Senate Bill 1358 and House Bill 6004 would expand an Education Achievement Authority (EAA) - a separate and statewide school district that would be overseen by a governor-appointed chancellor.

The new district would operate without oversight by the state superintendent of schools or the state board of education, Markavitch explained.

Even though there can be disagreements among residents with local school boards, "you have somebody you can go to" and work with to make changes, she said. She asked whether the community "will get the same response from Wall Street, when they're running our schools?"

Markavitch's slide show is here:

It looks like she's going through the fudged statistics they're using to sell "failed schools" in Michigan, comparing the education deformers' number with the actual ones. It looks like the deformers are cherry-picking...looks like the gov made some "horror-show" list of failing schools but most of the "schools" on the list are for juvenile offenders & alternative & special education high schools.

Looks like she also deals with those "international comparisons" that supposedly make the US look so terrible, noting that the US was never a leader in those tests & its postion is actually somewhat better than in the past (I'm just guessing what she's saying here based on the info in the slides).

She also has this, regarding the PISA tests for reading:

Korea (#1 Ranked) 539

Finland (#2 Ranked) 536

U.S. Schools with less than 10% of students in poverty: 551

U.S. Schools with up to 25% of students in poverty: 527

U.S. Total (#12 Rank) 500

She talks about ALEC & other stuff as well, so it looks like she's calling people's attention to the corporate/finance interests behind ed deform.

It looks like a presentation which might be easily adapted to present to the public in other parts of the country as well.

1. Dr. Markavitch says that she now believes some of the education deform lies are deliberate.

Here's a video she put up on the school district's website.

"Why would Michigan power brokers do this (lie about the stats) to public education in our state? Maybe a political agenda...an agenda for special interests....we know that millions of dollars are being spent to buy influence...how do we compete with this....?

2. My beloved Michigan has had it. They are killing public education. Unions are dead.

Women's reproductive rights are dead. They are re-working the Emergency Manager law so democracy is dead. Michigan is a Republican dystopian hell. Welcome to the future, GOP style.

3. I hope you will join with people fighting these developments in Michigan. Dr. Markavitch has asked

people to email her office & respond to the video; that & checking in your local school district is one avenue to finding a community of interest.

Similarly there should be some push-back on the emergency manager bill already in the works.

It ain't over. Keep hope alive!
