Heard there is gonna be some cosmic alignment going on and we all know it is the date of the winter solstice, so what are your plans?

(52,791 posts)Each year since 1990, on or near the first day of winter and the longest night of the year, National Coalition for the Homeless (NCH) has sponsored National Homeless Persons' Memorial Day to bring attention to the tragedy of homelessness and to remember our homeless friends who have paid the ultimate price for our nation's failure to end homelessness.
This is on all my correspondence that day:
Today, the first day of Winter, and facing the longest night of the year, is the National Homeless Person's Memorial Day, sponsored by the National Coalition for the Homeless to remember those who have perished for want of shelter in our Nation.
Right there with you.

(115,570 posts)I don't have any plans, since life will go on as usual. The Mayans didn't claim the world would end; time was just going to roll over into another cycle.
Y2K Day was kind of a hoot. Some people were convinced all the electricity in the world would disappear or something but I didn't believe it. A friend and I rented an airplane (I was working as a flight instructor at the time) so we could fly around and see if anything happened at 24:00 GMT (6:00 pm local time). The airlines were so afraid there would be glitches that they cancelled their flights that evening, so we had the skies around the normally very busy MSP area pretty much to ourselves. It was weird - we were the only plane talking to ATC for that half hour or so before 6:00 during what's normally the evening rush hour. And, of course, nothing happened, so we landed and went home to watch TV.
I think 12/21 will be similarly uneventful; some people might be disappointed.

(256 posts)... and am hence competent to inform you what will happen.
On Dec 21, 2012, there will be anxious crowds in the streets, traffic will be backed up, horrible noise and announcements will blast from loudspeakers in public places 24/7.
People will squeeze by each other, strange smells will fill the air, statues of mythical creatures will have been erected in the streets.
Because it will be 3 days before Xmas, and everyone will be rushing to buy last minute presents amidst a holiday-decorated suburban shopping hell.
Other than that, nothing .
Happy Holidays.
EDIT: DANG, RebelOne beat me to it by a minute...!!!

(19,841 posts)"The important point is that once a year, the earth orbits into the special position that creates the galactic alignment and once every 26,000 years, this happens at virtually the same moment as the winter solstice. This was the case in 1998 as shown by the work of Belgium astronomer Jean Meeus."

(This page has a long-winded explanation of the astronomy)
What's cool to me is that this alignment of the planets coinciding with the Solstice is extremely rare, and the Mayans considered it to usher in a period of "rebirth."
So I will use it as a time of meditation on the positives.
