Stop cross-polar flights, reduce Arctic warming, save money: study
Source: Nunatsiaq News
Here’s a way to keep the Arctic cold: prevent aircraft from taking shortcuts over the Arctic or only allow cross-polar flights during the dark months of winter. A recent study in the scientific journal Climatic Change on the effects of rerouting aircraft around the Arctic circle on Arctic and global climate looked at what would happen if cross-polar flights by international commercial aircraft were rerouted away from the Arctic. Its research determined that this rerouting would cut fuel-use emissions within the Arctic by 83 per cent. And the rerouting would delay the transport of heat-increasing pollutants from other regions to the high latitudes. 1. Restrict air flights just to save the climate?

We will not restrict the freedom of the rich to do whatever they want, even if it means making the climate change. IOW, the rich shall be allowed to rape the planet at will. |

4. Rich? Shit, it's everyone. Everything from Buy It Now, to that graduation gift to London for a month
|
The problem is not restricted to a class. It's the multiplicity.

Probably just 1% of the people have ever been rich enough to fly.
Say, didn't you once claim to live in a 5,000 sq foot bedroom? |

6. True. There are lots of things that people can do to prevent or deal with climate change, but...
|
...most of them will be ignored. Our political and business leaders only care about maximizing short term wealth, and the masses are only concerned with clinging to their jobs for another day. Any solution that hinders either goal even a small amount will be ignored.

3. Makes sense, really.

Too bad they'll probably end up dragging their feet on this, though. And given that there certainly will be a point where there is no ice one of these summers, and it very well could happen just 4-5 years from now, well.....maybe it's too late to avoid that I suppose.
