Riots in Mexico as President Peña Nieto is sworn in

New Mexican president sworn in amid violent protests

Protesters clashed with police outside the Mexican Congress in Mexico City on Saturday, as the country’s new president, Enrique Pena Nieto, took the oath of office.

Hundreds of demonstrators threw Molotov cocktails, firecrackers and rocks at security forces, who responded by using tear gas to disperse the crowd.

The new president has also promised to push for reforms that could bring major private investment into Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex, the crucial state-owned oil industry, which is currently struggling.

Enrique Pena Nieto, 46, won the election with 38.2 per cent of the vote against 31.6 per cent for the leftist candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. Nieto’s victory brought the Institutional Revolutionary Party back to power after being in the opposition for 12 years.

The ruling President Felipe Calderon of the conservative National Action Party came in third.

The Institutional Revolutionary Party at one time ruled Mexico for a 71-year stretch. Those years, party critics say, were marked with corruption, nepotism and multiple cases of voter fraud.
