tweeted by, Nick Schifrin ‏@nickschifrin

So horrible. David Oliver Relin “Three Cups of Tea" coauthor, committed suicide last month. Nobody reported until today http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/03/business/media/david-oliver-relin-co-author-of-three-cups-of-tea-dies-at-49.html

Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time
Greg Mortenson (Author), David Oliver Relin (Author)

Anyone who despairs of the individual’s power to change lives has to read the story of Greg Mortenson, a homeless mountaineer who, following a 1993 climb of Pakistan’s treacherous K2, was inspired by a chance encounter with impoverished mountain villagers and promised to build them a school. Over the next decade he built fifty-five schools—especially for girls—that offer a balanced education in one of the most isolated and dangerous regions on earth. As it chronicles Mortenson’s quest, which has brought him into conflict with both enraged Islamists and uncomprehending Americans, Three Cups of Tea combines adventure with a celebration of the humanitarian spirit . . .

5. Sometimes I think the world asks too much of people

And then deceives them into asking too much of themselves.

6. Is this the guy who was recently exposed as a fraud?

Or was this another book with a similar premise?

7. Worse. This is the co-author of the book that was exposed as fraudulent.

This is the journalist who probably got suckered by the lead author, who has now been exposed as a fraud. Being involved cost the journalist his career and his reputation, and now his life. Really sad.

8. it was the subject of this guy's book that was accused of fraud

the author himself seems to have gotten dragged into it more than anything.

10. it doesn't appear to me to be that simple, although parts of the book appear to be embellished

. . . the bulk of the subject and co-author, Greg Mortenson's, work and efforts remains undisputed and still held in high regard by many who know him.

David Oliver Relin never spoke publicly about the scandal.

12. They created fiction and sold it as fact because the facts would not sell. That's lying.

Sad that he offed himself, but Mortenson's story is very much disputed. That's the essence of the issue. Lying for reasons of self promotion is very unethical. I'm sad to see that society no longer holds the truth as a valuable thing.

11. So sad. Why is it that the real frauds, the banksters of this world, never committ suicide?

This guy tried to do a good thing. He didn't really hurt anyone. The banksters, on the other hand...

13. Psychopaths and Sociopaths are missing emotional intelligence, by definition. Those who are

not bereft of this factor, have consciences...clear or guilty, feel healthy shame, and are able to relate to the feelings of others...negative or positive...but appropriately.

14. This poor guy was forced to clean up Greg Mortenson's story

and turn it into something readable. It's not his fault Mortenson was a fraud.

I've met both of them, and Mortenson was the biggest egotistical dick. I'm so sorry for Relin.
