I'll bet. She had that look of a woman who wanted the throne . . . bad!

But I found the fact that Annie would not be occupying the WH even more satisfying than the fact that Mittens wouldn't be the new prez.
There was just something about her I really disliked. Never felt that way before about a would be first lady.

12. I've never seen a FLOTUS cand. whose public statements were as personally venomous as Ann Romney's

Laura Bush was anodyne. Hell, I almost even liked her. She was completely unoffensive in many ways.

Hillary Clinton was certainly involved and combative, but it always seemed to be policy driven, and she never seemed to be looking down her nose at people.

Barbara Bush had her rhymes with rich moments, but they were almost self-consciously patrician and therefore almost comical.

Ann Romney is practiced in shooting darts at people - finding the most hurtful thing to say and saying it. This is clearly a character trait she cultivated in her youth and has perfected in the shark-infested waters of the uber-rich social circuit. She is, to put it plainly, mean. She would have been a disastrous FLOTUS, precisely for that reason. It's a question of character.

27. An excellent analysis...

Watching her speak at the convention I was struck with the "Valley Girl" gestures and speech pattern. I couldn't believe that she thought women were that stupid and shallow. I thought back to Cindy McCain's speech and while not the equal of the one given by Michelle Obama this year, it was considerably better than Ann's. I felt vindicated in my judgement when I saw the 'grade level analysis of the speeches given by all of the wives you mentioned plus Cindy McCain. Ann Romney spoke at a fifth grade level...the lowest of modern candidates' wives while Michelle Obama scored highest with a speech delivered at a 10th grade level (probably the highest that can be easily understood by most people, but that's another topic)

"It's our turn now" drove me right around the bend.

at that same dinner that produced the infamous 47% video tape, he also said this:

Romney also said that the campaign purposefully was using Ann Romney "sparingly…so that people don't get tired of her."

I find her absolutely vile. The embodiment of the *negative* connotation of word entitlement.

I liked Laura. I like Hillary. I like Michelle.

I did not like Babs, especially after her vile Katrina statements (although her "beautiful" mind was almost laughable) or Nancy. But HRH Dressage Queen Annie made Babs and Nancy seem decent by comparison.

45. I actually do like Babs a bit

I like the fact that she is comfortable just being herself--she doesn't dye her hair or diet into a size 6 or get plastic surgery.

That in itself is kind of refreshing. Sometimes she looked old enough to be her husbands mom or grandmother--but she didn't care what people thought about her. That is actually kind of cool.

(she is an elitist --but I still give props to any woman who can have such confidence in herself)

....My opinion is Ann didn't want Mitt to run at all, which has been pretty evident since Mitt started his run several years. Additionally, she made at least two fairly recent public comments about fearing for Mitt's mental health during the general election campaign. Those aren't the comments of someone doing everything she can to get her husband elected.

I personally think she's pretty pleased how things turned out.

17. no one likes to lose

Those two got as invested in winning as any presidential couple does. It takes a large ego to presume you can lead and provide an example for the nation. They are not a humble or gracious pair.

She may well have revealed the shallowness of their ambition and their weaknesses, but she was as caught up in the attention and as transparently enthralled by the position of influence as any first lady candidate I've seen. I think Nancy Reagan might top all of the modern ones in her naked ambition for the position of influence.

54. Agree with you....

I think she is used to "winning" and so this loss must come at her pretty hard.

There was the potential excitement of the inauguration, the glitter of the inaugural balls and the American "throne", such as it is.

But I really don't think she was looking forward to being First Lady. It is a JOB. Yes it is a job with many perks but she would have to actually serve, or appear to serve, the nation. That would mean all manner of social events and finding a "cause" to champion and fight for.

I don't think she was really looking forward to that. I think she had aspirations of "royalty" but without any sense of the duty that accompanies the position.

But she definitely came across as arrogant and self-serving. So not only am I glad we don't have two destroyers as President and Vice President but I think the nation and the world are much better served by Barack and Michelle.

25. Ann "Norma Desmond" Romney

"I am big! It's the presidency that got small!"
I can see her descending the staircase, telling Mr. deMille she's ready for her close-up.
What a clueless, entitled, hateful person.
But you know what really kills me? If you had met someone who knew absolutely nothing about the election, and told them that Obama had an opponent whose wife had raised 5 kids and also had MS, they would automatically figure she would be an overwhelming asset to Romney's campaign and would help him secure the White House. Yet she was absolutely unsympathetic. That was fascinating to me. Every time she opened her mouth on national TV it was like listening to a Gorgon unleashed.
I will never shed any tears for thee, Queen Ann. Go back to Kolob where thy "destiny" awaits.

The fact that the election was even considered "too close to call" by so many for so long baffled the hell out of me. I'm sure they can retire in LaJolla and just relax. 70. She wanted the White House so bad.. she

begged Romney to Release The Tax Returns! Oh, wait.. she agreed. "That's All You're Going To Get."

Turns out.. That's all she's going to get.. just willard without their Mormon Prophet's Vision of a Mormon being in the WH.

That shit was scary.

72. I have several thoughts that I haven't been able to gel together

1. I feel sorry for Ann Romney -- raised in wealth, married wealth, lived in wealth and never, never, never was able to understand how the other 99% live, love, survive and, furthermore, never made the attempt to understand. What a shallow, empty life.

2. I feel disgusted with Ann Romney when I think of other wealthy people who have stepped outside their comfort zones and actually worked to better the lives of other people. Some of the Kennedys comes to mind, for example.

3. I feel sorry for both Romneys who were raised in their church to believe that they were superior to all other humans, living and dead. Any charity performed by either one of them was for the sole benefit of other mormons, not for the betterment of humanity as a whole. Their devotion to their religion did NOT make them better people but instead played to their worst and most self-serving sides.

4. I'm disgusted by the Romneys belief that somehow they were destined by "god" to fulfill one of their church's myths -- becoming President and ruling the US through the mormon church despite the fact the the US is pluralistic on religion and our founding documents specifically exclude a state religion.

5. Maybe I should feel some sympathy over their sudden realization that they are not the god-ordained royalty they thought themselves to be. Or not.

But one thing I'm very sure of: I am relieved and over-joyed that neither Romney was selected to live out their self-delusions with the US as their playground. I think they should follow their money and off-shore themselves (or self-deport?).

73. I wouldn't underestimate

the deleterious effect of reality on the psyches of those who live and breath religious delusion. These people are powerful fanatics of the Mormon church who most probably believed they had been chosen by god to fulfill the Mormon White Horse prophesy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Horse_Prophecy

Add to that the stress of Queen Annie's physical weakness due to MS and you have a recipe for depression and angst. I'm not a psychologist but I grew up in a religious cult and I know the kind of bizarre effects a hermetically sealed religious environment can have on people's sense of reality.

I feel sorry for Mitt and Anne Romney on the level of human compassion but on the other hand, bullshit and money have always been the engine of both authoritarian religious cults and preditory capitalism. The Romneys can't complain. As in...

Yeah it's a crazy world but they'll get over the pain eventually. Money is a good narcotic.
