On NPR last week I heard an interview with Nancy Pelosi, who said that if a deal hasn't been reached by the end of the week before Christmas, it is highly unlikely to happen at all...until next year, that is.
This is rare...the first real negotiations inside the beltway since the 90s. This is more a game to fill chatter time on the 24/7 cables. It's an easy story to play with...lots of "drama" and poutrage and everyone can "weigh in" while the real heavy lifting goes on behind closed doors. We're sure to get a roller coaster of stories of meetings and "getting close" on day and Boner or turtleman having a hissy fit the next. It's all a lot of angst that is sure to keep the eyeballs on the teevee and make pundits "relevant", but in the end some deal will be reached and we won't go over the "cliff". Now I suspect no one will be happy with the deal as it will mean tax increases for rushpublicans but also some cuts in social programs on our side. Nonetheless, the sun will rise, the rich will be paying more in taxes and people here on DU will find something wrong with the President.
