Need your advice, please :)

(Edit to add link to OP I ended up creating after the feedback in this thread. Thanks.

Hola

Before I post another "Help a DUer" OP (please see my journal for examples), I'd really, really appreciate some input.

General Discussion definitely gets the most eyeballs, but it's also very difficult to keep an OP kicked and visible (let alone rec'd), some days more than others.

And, I completely suck at creating attention-grabbing subject lines.

Do you have any suggestions as to how I can bring more attention to these OPs, since there are people who would like to help (even in the form of lending emotional support) but don't always see them? In the scheme of things, these OPs don't get a lot of recs compared to other posts, so it's a challenge just to keep it visible the first day.

(I don't mean to whine, but it would be a great reflection on the community if these OPs were given more recs and attention, since they're an example of putting our values into action.)

I don't want to post these OPs too often for fear people will ignore them. Do you feel I'm wrong about that? Do I need to post MORE often perhaps?

I initially wanted to post every Wednesday and Sunday, bringing attention to DUers' Wishlist posts at Wishadoo, but crises happen which make a schedule rather difficult to keep to.

There may not be anything I can do differently, but I'd appreciate your thoughts and suggestions.

Thanks, DU!

1. *** Need Your Advice, Please! ***

I think that stands out more than simply caps. Maybe not.

Can't you also post a direct link to Wishadoo in your sig line?

2. There ya go...

Two great, simple suggestions to start the process.

Thanks, randome. I'll do those two things right now.

6. I'm relatively new to DU

so I don't know all of the ins and outs.... But perhaps you could ask for a Forum for Wishadoo? This way people who want and have the capacity to share can always find the DUers who need help.

7. Thanks, Sekhmets Daughter...

(I'm enjoying your posts, btw.)

I don't believe that's an option. One of the reasons Wishadoo is able to help DU is that it takes the liability away from admins. In order to create a post asking for help (especially assistance involving $$), one needs to get permission from admins. That can take a while.

Wishadoo!'s platform takes care of that, not only for DU but other communities -- and individuals without a community, per se. When I post these OPs here, I highlight DUers' posts.

Skinner graciously granted me fairly blanket permission, providing it's not abused, to post Wishlist posts.

Even if another DU forum were possible, there's probably as much likelihood of people remembering to visit it as there is people remembering to visit Wishadoo!'s Wishlist on a regular basis.

Thanks though!

15. Why thank you...

I think you're doing a tremendous service. I must admit that if I don't see a post from you I don't remember to visit Wishadoo. It seems there are so many people and causes that need our help, it's wonderful that you enable us to help fellow DUers if we can.

8. I think you do fine with eye catching subject lines.

Maybe add a symbol tho to the lead like *** or ### or +++ (but always use the same symbol) so that they catch the eye of people scanning what to read next.

Posting at least once per week will allow people to see the need but not get overwhelmed as I am sure you must... or more often given the crisis involved.

And if there some 'hugh' event going on, you know whatever you post, no matter how important it is, will be overshadowed by 'hugh' event here. I think that that's just how it is. So if possible, wait until the initial onslaught of 'hugh' event related posts are over and then repost.

And if some people ignore your Wishadoo post, they wouldn't have helped out anyway. Pay them 'no nevermind'.

You are doing good work OGR, thanks for your posts and your commitment to helping so many people!

Very good idea to always use the same symbols.

Yeah, I always try to be mindful of the 'hugh' event influence.

Thanks again!

10. Ask Skinner and EarlG for a permanent spot on the Home page

maybe they could allow each request a solid week or more in a special corner just for Wishadoo

11. I wonder if this might work...

If I create subject lines like this, instead of "Help a DUer":

### WANNA PISS OFF GLENN BECK? ###

### WANNA PISS OFF RUSH LIMBAUGH? ###

Those of you who are new don't know that Wishadoo! was dissed on Glenn Beck's TV show in 2010. He and those like him are against what I'm trying to do; I was stalked (online) after being mentioned for several weeks, with veiled threats that they're watching my commie/pinko/socialist/nazi ass.

That type of subject line might be a better call to action.

16. You might try putting "Fuck you, Repukes!" in your title.

Most places, it's sex that sells. Here, it's anger.

19. lolol

I know......I often joke around saying I need to add profanity to my subject lines.

I'm thinking perhaps ### WANNA PISS OFF GLENN BECK?! ### would work, since he and his followers dislike what Wishadoo stands for so much, and I can insert another right-winger each time.

20. It would be wonderful if people would share Wishadoo with others...

Be it other online communities or even in the "real" world.

This links to a printable flyer with tear-offs that can be posted in libraries, grocery stores, etc.
