Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

Fri Jan 20, 2012, 11:18 AM

I got a rapist fraternity boy arrested on campus today.

This discussion thread was locked by Skinner (a host of the General Discussion forum).

Im sorry, I didnít edit this because im still jittery. So please pardon the typos.

Over the past few weeks, months on DU Iíve been reading about the culture of rape and violence against women that is prevalent in our society. This is, as I have found, especially the case on college campuses where groups like fraternities and athletic teams (though it is not solely them, it is prevalent everywhere) consider women to be objects; they pass out rape surveys; and blame women when they are the victim. It is very disturbing and I want to thank the people at DU who have brought this subject to light, regardless of the fact that even some people here donít like it.

I am very proud today because I did a good deed. I was walking through the cafeteria in the student union and a fraternity (the same national fraternity, whose members made the rape survey in Vermont) had set up a recruitment table. They were also selling cookies and things for a fundraiser. I walked by and they asked if I wanted to buy some of the cookies. It just sickens me to see them on campus because I know what they stand for and what they celebrateóviolence against women and the glorification of sex at any price. Im sure this fraternity was guilty of it too. Why else would a young man join a fraternity if not be around others who share in their hatred of women? I yelled at them and called them what they areórapists who practice violence against women. I yelled loud enough so the students sitting in the cafeteria would know what type of people share their classrooms.

I was trying to do two things. 1. Warn other students of their intentions and 2. Try to shame them into renouncing their actions (hoping that they had some conscience left). At first the fraternity boys at the table just looked down in disgust, they clearly knew what they did was wrong. I thought I was getting through to them. Then one of them got up and shoved me. Obviously he saw me as a Ďthreat to his future sexual conquests.í How dare I warn people, how dare I be concerned with the safety of women on our campus?!? Im not a big guy so I did go down on my backside (donít worry, no harm done).

But it just so happens that a campus police officer was walking toward the table and saw the assault. He arrested the frat boy and I WILL be pressing charges for assault. I am still one this adrenaline high even though this happened about an hour ago. I got a rapist off of the campus. This is great. I feel like Ive really done something for the betterment of the community as a whole. Thanks DU!!!

Im sending a letter to the President and Provost today asking them to please reconsider the fact that fraternities are allowed on campus.

48. I read the story and come out thinking this guy is the judge and jury.

People are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, but this guy already found them guilty of rape. Your calling them rapist, but what if they never raped anyone? Because you really have no evidence of any such thing calling them rapist would be slander.

What's next? Trying to get terrorist that are not really terrorist arrested? Your lucky you only got shoved.

5. Has that particular house on your particular campus

done any of the things you are talking about? Have there been any arrests? Do you know of any particular accusations of that fraternity on your own campus?

While nobody should have physically assaulted you, what makes you believe that there was an actual rapist at that table.

And why the smilies?

6. You know I got flamed for saying that every athiest I've met has been a argant person

and from this I am seeing you feel that every fraternity member is a rapest. This is 100% not true. I know many franternity guys who would never take advantage or treat a women badley every even when blind stinking drunk. You have fallen into the human trap or steriotyping because some fraternity members have been guilty of rape and the media has shoved those cases down our throats.

PS- The guy should not have assualted you but screaming at these men who have, as far as anyone knows, done nothing wrong is terribly rude and could give you a bad rep on campus.

7. It's good that his assault when noticed and was taken care of.

But I am not sure what you were doing. Was this like a single person protest? Was this the same guy that wrote that crap? Or is it just the affiliation from afar and perhaps these guys were not of the same ilk? Obviously if he shoved you, then he deserves the charge.

9. I wasn't raised in a culture of "rape and violence against women," and am not sure what you mean

It's unfortunate that some people think that way.

Why else would a young man join a fraternity if not be around others who share in their hatred of women?

To be around other young men with similar academic interests, or to drink beer.

I was trying to do two things. 1. Warn other students of their intentions and 2. Try to shame them into renouncing their actions (hoping that they had some conscience left). At first the fraternity boys at the table just looked down in disgust, they clearly knew what did was wrong. I thought I was getting through to them. Then one of them got up and shoved me. Obviously he saw me as a Ďthreat to his future sexual conquests.í

It appears to me, based on your own description, that you made some very big and poorly founded assumptions about what was going on in someone else's head, and picked a fight.

I must have missed that in the OP.

My son was a member of a fraternity when he was at Berkeley. They studied together, held community service events for low income kids, and yes, did drink beer on occasion. 10 years later he still has many of those friends and they network with each other for jobs, etc. I doubt rape was ever an issue with any of them.

Just because ONE chapter on ONE college campus is guilty of such behavior DOES NOT mean ALL Chapters across the U.S. is guilty of the same view points or behavior!

Women have been fighting the sterotype of Rape culture for years with "She wore that out fit so she was asking for it"! "She was drunk and being loose so she deserved it".

In a sense you have created a Sterotype for these men. Just because one Frat does something doesn't mean all it's brother chapters are guilty of such behavior!

I'm sorry but I think what you did was wrong and shameful.

didn't give any context of a specific incident involving one of the Frat members at the table, I'm not really sure why you would yell at them. It just seems like you're making a broad brush attack that all fratboys are rapists. I expect this thread will be hidden by a jury soon.

You're doing what Westboro does, provoking people to assault you so you can press charges and claim to be a victim. Thats not a positive way to affect the situation.

I read all night, and memorized it all. The magic unicorn angel then took the Sacred Golden Diamond Encrusted Spiral Notebook of Woo back to the halls of the Almighty Dental Floss King.

For some reason, no one believes me when I tell them about this.
