On H2, the runup to Dec. 21 is underway.

It just sounds to me that if solar storms and flares cause the poles to shift, it isn't survivable anyway--and can neither really be prepared for or prevented. I also don't have any faith in how humans will behave in such a crisis. Many can't even deal with black Friday sales without going insane. Your thoughts?

19. Yeah, I noticed. A totally under-researched area by historians. I don't remember any

History of Aliens in my high school textbooks.

9. Cool link.

NASA might want to consider publicizing this more. If there is any real danger caused by Dec. 21, it might be people panicking now that it is approaching.

6. I only hope kittens and trees survive

They say we need to stay away from anything electrical, even cars, because in case of huge solar flares all electronics short circuit.

8. I Will Be Celebrating on December 22nd

Celebrating the Solstice, the fact that civilization didn't end, and the death of the New Age movement. Unless, of course, our Space Brothers decide to visit that day.

Seriously, archaeologists just found another Mayan calendar that goes beyond 2012 earlier this year. Suck it, H2!

10. I heard about that too.

But hysteria over ancient Mayan prophecies is so much more fun. And our space brothers might turn out to be pretty cool.

11. Wow, kind of ignorant to post that...

The New Age movement will be celebrating the Fifth Dimension on 12/22!

21. Actually, what happened to the first calendar was.....

.....that the stonecutter had a hot date that night and decided to knock off early.

Seriously, gang, all that will happen on Dec. 21 will be some really, really wild end-of-the-world parties, followed on Dec 22 by some truly apocalyptic hangovers!

12. I enjoy these shows.....

Who knows. There could be SOME truth to the Mayan prophecy. It's interesting. We don't know what's in store for mankind. With all the info coming out about the antarctic melting and climate change causing a new Permian extinction, we could be approaching the end of earth "as we know it".

13. On Dec 22 we will wake up and go on

And reality is..does the world end on Dec 31? No serious.

By the way, it's a huge misunderstanding of maya tradition. This is more about a changing of the spirit not polar shifts...and a new age of change. It is a spiritual thing and renewal.

Oh and they found another calendar.

18. Pagans will sensibly be celebrating the Winter Solstice and return of the Sun

The Wheel of the Year turns -- always has, always will. Winter Solstice to Spring Equinox, to Summer Solstice to Fall Equinox, and Winter Solstice again.

I'm sorry so many people are 1) so utterly disconnected from the cycles of Nature, and 2) so woefully ignorant of Science. Well, and not to leave out 3) I'm sorry so many people are batshit crazy and/or religiously insane.

We live in a wonderful and beautiful world. My personal season's greetings to you all: Happiness from Solstice to Solstice!

Hekate

20. Humans are addicted to symbolism

The interesting thing to me about the symbol of Dec 21, 2012 is that is has such broad power. This seems to hint that there is something in the cultural unconscious (just below the surface of general awareness) that is making us feel that human affairs are undergoing a radical shift, right now. The symbol was just convenient in terms of content and timing.

This feeling in the Zeitgeist has nothing to do with the Mayans, and everything to do with global financial collapse, catastrophic climate change, Peak Oil, overpopulation and the rest of our chickens that are coming home to roost.
