Porn causes rape (or does it)?

http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/all-about-sex/200904/does-pornography-cause-social-harm

...some porn-haters declare that X-rated material does more than just disgust them. They contend that it contributes to significant social harm. In The Porn Trap (2008), psychotherapists Wendy and Larry Maltz assert that it's a significant factor in sexual irresponsibility and divorce.

-----------------------------------------------

But the evidence clearly shows that from a social welfare perspective, porn causes no measurable harm. In fact, as porn viewing has soared, rates of syphilis, gonorrhea, teen sex, teen births, divorce, and rape have all substantially declined. If Internet porn affects society, oddly enough, it looks beneficial. Perhaps mental health professionals should encourage men to view it.

------------------------------------------------

Guess what. Since the arrival of Internet porn:

* Sexual irresponsibility has declined. Standard measures include rates of abortion and sexually transmitted infections. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), since 1990, the nation's abortion rate has fallen 41 percent. The syphilis rate has plummeted 74 percent. And the gonorrhea rate has plunged 57 percent.

* Teen sex has declined. The CDC says that since 1991, the proportion of teens who have had intercourse has decreased 7 percent. Teen condom use has increased 16 percent. And the teen birth rate has fallen 33 percent.

* Divorce has declined. Since 1990, the divorce rate has decreased 23 percent.

* Rape has declined. According to the Justice Department's National Crime Victimization Survey, since 1995, the sexual assault rate has fallen 44 percent.

Does pornography breed rape? Do violent movies breed violent crime? Quite the opposite, it seems.

First, porn. What happens when more people view more of it? The rise of the Internet offers a gigantic natural experiment. Better yet, because Internet usage caught on at different times in different states, it offers 50 natural experiments.

The bottom line on these experiments is, "More Net access, less rape." A 10 percent increase in Net access yields about a 7.3 percent decrease in reported rapes. States that adopted the Internet quickly saw the biggest declines. And, according to Clemson professor Todd Kendall, the effects remain even after you control for all of the obvious confounding variables, such as alcohol consumption, police presence, poverty and unemployment rates, population density, and so forth

---------------------------------------------------------

Everyone was doing it, so I figured I would post my own rape thread.

God this place has really lost its fucking mind.

Y'all have a great weekend.

4. Is there verifiable evidence

that internet porn has caused the decreases in teen sex, sexual irresponsibility, divorce and rape? Is there actually a correlation?

Ever since I started using henna on my hair, I've been having dental problems. However there is no evidence whatsoever that one thing is connected to the other.

pop-psychology? You may be right, but I would like to see something persuasive.

10. Correlation does not prove causation. But it's strong evidence.

And saying it's not an automatic causation, doesn't imply that it's not a causation.

Assuming it's not a coincidence, and a large sample makes that unlikely, what explains the correlation? Well there could be other things, but if they don't correlate, that kind of rules them out.

In this case one should not overlook the possibility of multiple causalities.

13. And wouldn't you know Romney wanted to install Porn Filters on new computers

I recall one of Romney's first plans once becoming President was having Porn Filters put on new computers and he was planning to combat porn.

Just shows you how screwed up the right wingers priorities are. Like everything else they got it all backwards.
