Washington Post: A detached Romney tends wounds in seclusion after failed White House bid

The man who planned to be president wakes up each morning now without a plan.

Mitt Romney looks out the windows of his beach house here in La Jolla, a moneyed and pristine enclave of San Diego, at noisy construction workers fixing up his next-door neighbor’s home, sending regular updates on the renovation. He devours news from 2,600 miles away in Washington about the “fiscal cliff” negotiations, shaking his head and wondering what if.

Gone are the minute-by-minute schedules and the swarm of Secret Service agents. There’s no aide to make his peanut butter and honey sandwiches. Romney hangs around the house, sometimes alone, pecking away at his iPad and e-mailing his CEO buddies, who’ve been swooping in and out of La Jolla to visit. He wrote to one who’s having a liver transplant soon: “I’ll change your bedpan, take you back and forth to treatment.”

It’s not what Romney imagined he would be doing as the new year approaches.

Four weeks after losing a presidential election he was convinced he would win, Romney’s rapid retreat into seclusion has been marked by repressed emotions, second guessing and, perhaps for the first time in the overachiever’s adult life, sustained boredom, according to interviews with more than a dozen of Romney’s closest friends and advisers.

14. oh poor wittle anniepo: From the article:

By all accounts, the past month has been most difficult on Romney’s wife, Ann, who friends said believed up until the end that ascending to the White House was their destiny. They said she has been crying in private and trying to get back to riding her horses.

No honey, it wasn't your destiny. You will never live in the White House and no one gives a flying fuck about your sickening stories.

Anne is a woman of delicate sensitivities, nearer to heaven than any of you drooling detractors could possibly understand. And now she and her husband have been denied their rightful place in the sun through the actions of dull-witted and unwashed peasants no doubt corrupted by demonic forces. It's all so unspeakably sad…

I don't know if it's their wealth or their religion or both that made them/her believe in this "destiny", but it's hard to understand the arrogance. It's sad there is no way to get thru to them or their minions to where they could actually get it, but I fear they will continue to live in their cocoon and pity us for our ignorance. As for me, I hope to never read another story about the Queen and her horses.

Romney has had everything handed to him on a silver platter his entire life. He does not know defeat. At. All. That's why he's having a difficult time coping. It's a completely alien concept to him.

6. Yea, detached from reality, and not just Romney

It is highly disturbing to which extent the Romney campaign AND most other Republicans deluded themselves about their chances of winning. Their ability to completely shut out reality and surround themselves with pollsters and pundits who told them what they wanted to hear as opposed to the truth is frightening in its scope. To think that this lot could ever get into power at the White House is frightening.

in which a mega-multimillionaire retreats to lick his wounds while:

• He "looks out the windows of his beach house here in La Jolla" (my heart is breaking for him)

• He has been "spotted driving a new black Audi Q7, a luxury SUV manufactured in Slovakia." (it's what we all do when we're feeling down)

• His "wife, Ann, who friends said believed up until the end that ascending to the White House was their destiny ... has been crying in private and trying to get back to riding her horses." (I always go for my dressage horse when a case of the blues washes over me)

• "They ordered their turkey dinner from Boston Market, the home-style restaurant chain, because there were too many kids running around the house to bother with cooking a feast." (What kind of idiot am I, who cooked for three straight days for Thanksgiving? I could have ordered out from Boston Market.)

68. No kidding....

I usually feel sympathy for the loser of the presidential election*, even if I wanted that candidate to lose, because I can certainly relate to loss, disappointment and failure and I imagine that no matter what a person has achieved, they still feel such things just as acutely as I do. However, this article serves only to remove any ounce of sympathy I may have felt for Mitt Romney. No aide to make him a sandwich? Really? That's some great loss when he can afford a huge staff of household help? You get the impression that what they lost out on was a lifestyle/status upgrade and not the opportunity to serve the American people.

*I make exceptions for people like Dick Cheney who, quite frankly, doesn't even seem human.

81. Too many kids running around?

According to the article, it was just 5 children. In an enormous house. Probably with at least part time household help. I thought the Romneys were supposed to epitomize the ideal American family.

I'm also an idiot: I make my Thanksgiving dinners from scratch, and it something comes up, like a trip to the emergency room (minor kitchen accident, everything's fine now) my guests will just have to cope with things being a bit disorganized. Buying dinner from a chain restaurant? I can only imagine what the Romneys' state dinners would have been like.

Eh, I'm not sure you can call a man an "overachiever" simply for being wealthy when he was, y'know, BORN wealthy. And it's not as if he was a Steve Jobs or something, adding new things to the world through his business. His entire "business" was destroying functioning companies and sucking out the money. He leveraged capital, which he was BORN with.

Not an overachiever, sorry.

Ecstatic he has gone into hiding and left public life. He's not making ignorant statements every day that continue to tarnish the GOP brand - not that McInsane and others aren't stepping up there to take his place. There's a reason only 3 senators are still beating that Benghazi dead horse - it's a dead horse.

And good grief. You guys on the right need to stop with the editorials about how Willard is such a good man and was the right candidate. Obviously you are wrong because the US electorate didn't agree with you on Nov. 6th. By quite a margin I might add.

If he were really a businessman, he'd be chomping at the bit with his next new entrepreneurial idea.

He would have a stable of ideas that he would pull from and put into effect.

No, sadly enough, he is not a businessman. He's just a typical republican leech who prospers off the efforts and accomplishments of others.

16. Wow, a story about

clueless asshole Republicans.

He’s not a poor loser,” said John Miller, a meatpacking magnate who co-chaired Romney’s finance committee and owns the beach house next door. “He’s not crying on anybody’s shoulders. He’s not blaming anybody. . . . He’s doing a lot of personal introspection about the whole process — and I’m not even sure that’s healthy. There’s nothing you can do about it now.”

<...>

In private, Romney has told friends he has little interest in helping the Republican Party rebuild and rebrand itself.

Advisers also said he felt no need to explain himself after his comments to donors about Obama using the power of incumbency to give “gifts” to women, black and Latino voters leaked into the public sphere. One adviser said Romney regretted the remarks “coming out the way it did.” Fehrnstrom, meanwhile, said, “He was expressing the frustration that any challenger would feel about an incumbent who used the powers of his incumbency -- as we would have if the shoe was on the other foot.”

I don't know, Mitt seems like a perfect example of a sore loser.

After years that certain jerks just *will NOT go away* - and by jerks I mean Joementum, Grifter PALIN, and Mc5planes - maybe this particular jerk is being "disappeared" even by his own party since the article says he shows no interest in rebuilding/rebranding it.

21. You know something?

I am getting sick of hearing about how much of a rough time this has been for Romney and how "depressed" he is. First of all, compared to millions of people here in this country, his problems PALE IN COMPARISON. He is healthy, wealthy, has beautiful homes, and a beautiful family that loves him. Does he have to worry about paying the bills? NO! His wife has MS, but is she as bad as many who have the terrible disease? Thankfully - NO. He is 65 - Does HE have to worry about whether he can retire or whether he needs to pick up part time work? NO!

You want to know what a "rough time" is? When you're President of the United States in 2009, the country is losing 800,000 jobs per month, and we are looking at entering a second Great Depression, as thousands are involved in two wars overseas. And you handle all of these challenges with style and grace.

THAT is a "rough time". NOT losing an election that you were destined to lose all along if you listened to all of the mainstream pollsters instead of retreating into denial. EVEN WHEN your "internal polls" (which had you winning in a landslide on election day), had you losing the election all throughout the process until several weeks before election day. EVEN BY THOSE NUMBERS - that shows that it wasn't like the campaign thought all along that they had this election in the bag!

Is it a disappointment for Romney? Yes. Just like it was for our guys in 2000 and 2004. And the results of those elections were MUCH closer than 2012. But we didn't see our guys slip into seclusion. It has been almost a month - it is time for Mitt to start acting like a man and deal with it.

Last edited Sun Dec 2, 2012, 02:01 PM - Edit history (1)

articulate his vision for America as well as Obama, but I remember his exhaustion in the last few months of the campaign on the stump in 2000.

After Delaty flew GOP congressional staffers to break federal law by disrupt the vote in Florida, breaking into the counting room, shoving security around and intimidating the workers, the case went to the GOP-controlled USSC. The GOP sent church buses to curse him and his family at the vice-presidential mansion in D.C., keeping his family awake during the night, screaming 'Get out of Dick Cheney's house!' although it wasn't 2001 yet. It was on cable television then. Now they've blacked out the goon tactics from the viewers.

Mocking of Gore didn't end with mass produced 'Sore Loserman' signs, the media mocked him for growing a beard and gaining weight. It appeared he was depressed and isolated himself and his family for a while. He was a good man, he won the election by the popular vote, but good did not prevail. The right used their media shills to slander him and his ideas before the election, and they made his name into a term of derision.

I'm not concerned with Mittens as much as his followers. Like the toxic team of McCain and Palin, as bad as they were, their followers were much more dangerous. I thought Mitt offering to drive his pal back and forth from the hospital and changing his bedpan was a good sign. But Mittens under pressure, reminds me of Stalin.

He wasn't fit to be president, or the head of a corporation. He should have stayed out of the spotlight, been a family man. I think that's the only honest success he's ever had, no matter how screwed up we regard him or them.

They appear to love him. I think he's a fractured soul who needs that to hold himself together. He is vanquished for the time being, he's played his part in this grosteque corporatist play before the world. That's just my dumb opinion, though.

I can't think of even one thing. It is no wonder he has no sense of self pride or the feeling of achievement that only a success at the end of a difficult struggle can give. He has never experienced either. I don't even want to imagine what his reaction would have been to a world leader telling him "no".

50. That said, it has to be a pretty big blow for anyone

To go through such an intense and grueling campaign and come up short has to be pretty demoralizing for anyone. Especially when so many people worked so hard for you and you feel like you let them down.

I know from experience what it's like to try really hard for something and fail, though fortunately I've never had the whole world watching.

I in no way wanted him to win, but for some reason, I am finding it hard to take pleasure in stories like this. Is it wrong that on some level I can't help but feel sorry for anyone in his position?

Romney represents everything that is WRONG with America - that bastard got rich off the backs of real workers while trashing the less privileged - he has been entitled his entire life and for years he has felt entitled to the presidency.......well guess what? He was not able to pull off what Dubya did, so he is where he fucking belongs. I hope it bothers him the rest of his parasitic-rich-ass life.

It's satisfying enough to me that Obama gets another 4 years as president, and that the meeting they had the other day wasn't a meeting to facilitate the transition. I'm happy that we don't have to watch them ride in a limo together to Romney's inauguration.

I don't need to take pleasure in Romney's personal misery over losing in order to feel at peace. Just knowing that he won't be president and that we have another 4 years of a president I admire and respect for the first time in my adult life is enough for me.

83. That's not what the article said

I think the article said something about how one of Romney's friends/donors said that Romney had called and said "sorry I let you down."

I read an article the day before the election where they interviewed Mondale, Dukakis and Dole about what it's like to lose a presidential election, and it made me realize how hard it must be for anyone. I know how down I get when a candidate I support loses, so I can't imagine what it's like to be the candidate, or a top adviser to a candidate. In some ways the latter might be worse, because you feel like you have someone you believed in down.

to go back to obviously.

Actually this is really pathetic. His life is really empty now that campaigning is finished of course as it would be for anyone, but these stories exposing exactly HOW empty and shallow his "real" life actually is/was must be pretty humiliating....

More than that, I wonder if this has given he and Ann (and the rest of the Rmoney family) some pause about the "prophecies" of their bogus religion. They really believed they were "destined" to win, "destined" to fulfill the White Horse prophecy. Its clear they truly believed in that nonsense when you read this piece.

But they didn't win.

It would be interesting if a reporter could get a scoop on if losing has had any impact on their faith.

Yeah right! Is that why he had the campaign credit cards canceled on his staffers on the night he lost, because he cared for them? Romney is nothing more than a greedy asshole manipulating dishonest douchebag. Why are they trying to paint him as a caring person when he's anything but.

Powerful acquaintances support you, emotionally if not financially. Even political hacks and the political parties (R in this case) have standards, yet when The Run is lost, there isn't even anyone to hire. That's the problem.

77. Interesting article, interesting insights...

I couldn't be sure before, but I think Mittens might be an Introvert Personality Type...this retreat and...seclusion...seems to fit that, as well as a lot of his behavior in dealing with people in Public...

Also, this IS probably the first time in his life that he couldn't have something he wanted, and how he deals with it will be telling. All Men have to journey through this process at some point; I hope he LEARNS something form it, hope he gains some insight...
Since he was not actually able to do any Executive-Level damage to this Nation, I say we let him be. It's very true that he DID deserve our scorn while he was the Candidate, but I don't think Wrath becomes us in this case, unless he does something Publically Stupid going forward. Bush on the other hand...well, lets just say that I hope the next time he is able to leave his house, he's in a Casket.

As for Ann, and her grieving over not becomming Prom Queen, well, just fuck her.

80. Here's a suggestion, Mitt. Bet ya can't do it...

After Romney’s father, George, lost his 1968 presidential race and finished serving in President Nixon’s Cabinet, he ran a national non-profit organization that advocated volunteerism. Friends said Romney has mentioned the Clinton Global Initiative as a model he might replicate.

Don't replicate it. Join it. Without any preconditions, like renaming it to stick your name in. Don't be the top dog. Otherwise, whatever you do will just be an excuse to feed the massive ego that couldn't comprehend you would lose.

You ran a campaign that was a perfect blend of horseshit, elephant shit, and bullshit. You took days off at the precise time you should have been capitalizing on a boost. Your entire tech operation -- from "Amercia" to the ORCA fiasco was shoddy crap shoveled out because you thought it was good enough, because you set up an operation that had no quality control, no reality check.

Here's something to do, Mitt: trickle it down. Travel the length and breadth of the country and spend every damn cent you have. You have a lot of money, so that could take a while if you're buying the things that us mere mortals buy.
