Go Nancy!

Pelosi threatens discharge petition to force vote on middle-income tax cut extension.

So what does that mean? There's a bill, passed by the Senate way back in July, to extend just the tax cuts for the middle class. House Speaker Boehner has refused to bring this bill to the floor of the House. So Pelosi is mulling an effort to force leadership to take up that bill, which President Obama is ready to sign.

It's not going to be easy to achieve, because she needs 218 signatures for the petition to work, and that means getting 25 Republicans on board. But even if forcing the bill to the floor isn't likely, this would be another way to shine a bright light on the fact that Republicans are holding the middle-class tax cuts hostage on behalf of the wealthiest Americans. That doesn't look good, particularly in the weeks before Christmas, and will give Democrats another cudgel to beat Republicans with.

It's also possible that a few Republicans will jump ship, not wanting to be Scrooged, and that will just be yet another headache for Boeher. That's always a good thing.

She didn't do enough of that when she had Boner's job.

But if you're going to do this, now is the time -- right after a sweeping Democratic party win.

I like Rep. Pelosi's chess strategy here.

So far they've been pretty sympathetic to crybaby Boehner, Eric Canker and Yertle the Turtle.

could be used next session, when there are a few more Dems in the House and Boner has threatened to hold EVERYTHING hostage IF Senate Dems change filibuster rules.

27. hahahaha thats awesome=)

Shit like this is why I like Nancy, even though I know at times she can be a thorn in the side of American Liberalism...she knows EXACTLY how and HOW FAR to push, and then when to step back and let the other side save face a little bit. And when she starts to REALLY PUSH, it means she already knows exactly what the Whip Count is. In that respect, she is the COMPLETE OPPOSITE of the current Speaker.

Go, Baby, go... We have your back.

31. Procedurally, this is awesome, but I am not a fan of extending these cuts.

This will hit SS/Medicare and give the 1% class just more ammunition for privatizing SS as "insolvent".

35. I don't think this affects the payroll tax cuts....

only the income taxes.

I could be wrong, but I don't think so. If they do this, the 1% tax breaks will expire naturally.

Along with the emergency unemployment extensions and the federal cuts.

Aside from the obvious positives here, I teach American Government and now I have a good current example of the use of a discharge petition.

34. Thank you kpete, good analysis

I worked very hard to do my small part in electing, reelecting President Obama. This year I
contributed to 3 Senate races. Until I perceive some substantial action from Democratic members of Congress, my resources will go to local races. Teapublicans are taking over our state legislatures.

Nothing would please me more than a return of the gavel to Congresswoman Pelosi.
