10. I was riding in a car with someone who said this...

I asked her:
Do you mean the 1950's of segregation? The 1950's of McCarthyism? The 1950's of nuclear proliferation and the red scare? The 1950's of the Korean War?
She said no to all of those.
So I asked her which 1950's she meant.
She said the one with poodle skirts and stuff.
I said I don't think that 1950's existed.

That said, I think many older republicans yearn for those days because they were kids then. They weren't exposed to the realities of the time. So what they are really wanting is to be safe with mommy and daddy again.

Kind of sad really.

13. ...or do you mean

the 1950's of 91% tax rate for the top bracket??

What is being proposed is dwarfed by comparison. And somehow during that time businesses and 'job creators' were still able to create jobs.

Go figure...

35. Welcome to DU, yorokmok and rwsanders!

Glad you're both here! And you each make GREAT points! Conveniently enough, they don't remember THAT 1950s - with the 91% tax bracket (when, at the same time, ONE paycheck was enough to support a family of four quite nicely, thank you). That theory about wishing for the days when they were children themselves and everything was SOOOO comfy and there was NOOOOO worry, NO muss, NO fuss. But the same conditions apply now in one respect. They had NO awareness of reality back in the '50s when they were kids. And they STILL have NO awareness of reality to this very moment.

16. Yep, that's it.

I have had the theory that some people get stuck in time...and it falls mostly to the conservative ones, but it seems that they get stuck at the high school level...And if you notice it some of them have the same hair style as they did then...I often wonder if someone told them "these are the best years of your life" and that became the guiding principle of their life...
Yes it is kind of sad.
And welcome to DU.

27. Yes, they did. Along with some of the most profound sexism ever -- and we all had to grow up in

that climate. It took years for us to liberate ourselves from that crazy cultural time of paternalism.

22. Re: the last cartoon:

My MOM actually did this. We'd had a "lawn jockey" for years (had horses). Somewhere around 1970, she painted the face and hands white. Years later she gave it to my daughter, It was stolen from her townhouse apartment door within a few days.

I haven't seen it in six months or more. Was it recently restarted, or does it just drop out of sight too fast?

34. Well stated in a movie............refers to the 1950's

A quote from American President with Michael Douglas:

He is interested in two things and two things only: making you afraid of it and telling you who's to blame for it. That, ladies and gentlemen, is how you win elections. You gather a group of middle-aged, middle-class, middle-income voters who remember with longing an easier time, and you talk to them about family and American values and character. And wave an old photo of the President's girlfriend and you scream about patriotism and you tell them, she's to blame for their lot in life, and you go on television and you call her a whore.

38. All of these are good.

But, I just LOVE Santa's expression in "I want it to be the 1950's".

Bwhahahahahahahahahaha!

Sad to say, that one is spot on.

I was born back then...and I NEVER want to go back there, ever again! Even though my childhood was basically good, I have also not forgotten how horrible those times were. Most people don't realize that the politics/mores/atmosphere of the fifties lasted until about 1967. It took a lot to shake up and break through the massive clunky repression/oppression of the fifties.

People who idolize the 1950's are deluded, to say the least.
