7. They love to do this during the holidays.

This year it's worse than usual because they expect layoffs to pump the stock price. Then they dump the stocks and pay this year's rate on capital gains in advance of next year's rise.

The last thing executive pay packages should ever have contained is stock options. The temptation to pump and dump is always too great, heightened by fear the taxes will go up.

or to my coworker who is my partner on our machine. I'm sure his baby will just wait until a more opportune time to be born that works out well for the executives. His wife is being induced this morning.
This just sucks.

9. They don't care and wouldn't if you told them this

All you've ever represented to the managerial class is too many dollars going out the door, not how many dollars your work has brought in to the company.

Come the revolution, every business school in the country should be razed and the grads all sent back for re education by the working class.

I'm sorry this happened to you. It's happened to me too.

12. Shit. Why do they ALWAYS have to have layoffs at Christmas, of all times?

Isn't it enough for the 1% to have the chance to break people's spirits during the OTHER eleven months of the year?

I am so sorry this has happened to you.

It is so wrong that we have a system that lets the few keep DOING this to the many.

Even getting up in the morning and going out to find something else for yourself after this is an act or resistance against the forces who inflicted this on you and your fellow workers.

You have friends and allies you do not even know as yet.

Live in hope and rage.

actually, businesses slow down to a crawl while everyone goes into disconnect mode.

business owners understand this and trim the fat (so to speak) to either keep comfy margins or just survive.

22. Did you get time to prepare at all?

All the research department administration in UC were laid off late in 2009. We found out about it in July and they had to give us 60 days notice by law. Fortunately because UC policy is to practice preferential re-hire for UC employees who have lost their jobs over outside applicants a lot of us were re-hired by the new administrative unit which was created to serve in the administrative capacity for all the research units. There are around 60 research units.

Of course the new administrative unit hired much less people than they laid off. That was the whole point. A form of internal downsizing.

They're doing something similar again and it will affect us in July 2013. They're yanking the employees from every academic unit who do similar jobs in each department and putting them into "Shared Services", a new unit created to do just that over a period of 2 or 3 years. But this time they're laying off supervisors and managers who have to apply for jobs with them. The rest of us are just being moved to another location and working for "Shared Services" instead of one department and the work is going massively electronic.

The fun never stops when you have a multi headed behemoth like a State University slogging and lurching into the 21st Century.

I must say though that I think these moves are healthy and necessary for the University of California to survive and flourish. It can't remain an outdated drag on the State. It has to become viable.

I hope you find better employment very quickly.

27. Shit!.. That really sucks..

The really awful part is that so many companies' fiscal year ends in Oct & Nov, so their layoffs do as well.. My husband once came home the day before Thanksgiving with a termination notice.. The really scary thing was that his boss was a creep who had been using OUR credit cards to finance some of his expenses.. Luckily, he did pay it off, but what a nasty holiday surprise for us.. I feel your pain

30. I've been through it a few times too

And it just sucks. Plain and simple.

One company I worked for actually did it well. They were bought out by a larger company and somehow managed to get agreement for a fair lay-off. We were give a month of wages for every year worked there, and we were able to stay on their insurance for a period of time too. They also brought in counselors, and resume assistance. We had classes on how to write a great resume, how to interview well etc. I've used what I learned there many times since then. No one was happy, but we didn't feel like we've been shafted either.

31. Always at this time of the year

I remember here about 4 years ago they came around two days after the Christmas party and laid off 10% of the damned staff.

The managers were glad handing and bullshitting the people they were going to can during the party, just made me sick. One of the ladies that helped organize the party was one to get the boot. None of us has bothered trying to organize one since.

39. So sorry to hear this.

They're doing the same at the company I used to work for. I took an early retirement this month in part because I thought some younger people deserved a chance to keep their jobs.

The sickening part of this is many of the departments where they're laying people off are working massive overtime. The rumor is the company's trying to bullshit Wall Street into thinking they're cutting costs in hopes their stock price will rise.

would they? I've heard that that company slashed a bunch of jobs in October, with just a couple hundred workers remaining.

I saw this trend starting back when I was in high school. Then I saw it up close and personal when I worked in a similar plant. I can really empathize with your situation.
