Fox News hosts are known for insensitive remarks, and yesterday was no exception. During Fox News The Five,, co-host Andrea Tantaros described why she believes the recession was a good thing for this generation of children. She explained that the millennial generation feels too entitled, and because of that kids need an attitude adjustment.
She also stated she think the recession was good for kids because theyve been humbled a little bit.
Of course, shes not talking about children in wealthy households, like the ones her and her co-workers can afford. Shes talking about the 15 million children living below the poverty line, or more than 1 in 5 total. Children living in wealthy households dont have the same hardships as children living in poverty, such as not having enough food to eat and going to bed hungry. Children in impoverished households are also more likely to suffer from stress and depression, because they often worry about their parents financial situations.

And that's good for the world?

(490 posts)I fail to see what is wrong with this wealthy, coiffed and preened creature casting aspersions on those who are met with the genuine hardship a recession invariably produces. She seems like a lovely girl; indeed, intellectual heavyweight Pat Toomey, for whom she worked, will doubtless approve of her well-judged remark, one that in no way goes to further the...vague idea that Republicans might be a little bit out of touch.

(490 posts)I'm glad you suspected so. It wouldn't be the first time I've gotten into trouble for people misunderstanding what I considered pretty thickly layered sarcasm this evening / morning.

(602 posts)As someone who -- like MANY on DU, I'm absolutely sure -- did NOT grow up in a wealthy household, let me just say that this whole crazy meme that poor folks (hell, regular folks too) aren't WORKING HARD for every dime they have is so frustrating, angering, and -- more than anything -- offensive.

(490 posts)- and it happens with great regularity in Britain, from where I hail, from Government down - ...this notion that the reason for you being super-rich is because you've "worked hard" and that if you are in dire poverty, in debt and just coping or simply just muddling through day to day, you couldn't possibly have made the same effort.
There is a genuine believe from these people that your bank balance directly correlates with the effort you've ploughed into your life, mitigating circumstances for a comparative lack of wealth be damned.

And welcome to DU, Eid Ma Clack Shaw! We're glad to have you with us!

(20,830 posts)They think if they continue to work hard, continue to buy into the system then they too will be rich. The only thing keeping that from happening is all the hangers on getting "free" stuff that is preventing them from getting rich. The shockingly low upward mobility rate in the US appears to be a rather well kept secret.

(27,630 posts)I would like to see that lady lose her job at FOX and go work at Blockbuster. What makes her so great or deserving of her salary, anyway? She's just sitting there spewing opinions, as far as I can tell. At least the blockbuster workers do something productive.
