How do I determine who started or holds an LLC title?

Like for any given business. There is a place in my neighborhood and I sort of need to make sure they're not freepers before I give them my business.

Years ago, a pretty savvy man named Rack Jite posted a *very* prophetic thing: this is capitalism, Jack. You vote each and every day with your dollars.

Well, my resolution is to start being much more responsible about that.

Anyway, how can I determine who owns a business?

Thanks everyone!

1. Usually on the state's Secretary of State site, the information is public

and searchable.

4. If it's an LLC or corporation, your state should have public records.

For individual owners, it's more difficult. Try asking an employee.
Also check websites.

The problem is, once you discover the owner(s), how will you find out their political sentiments?

One way would be to look at online political contribution lists, which are public.

And in my area, some businesses put up political signs during election seasons.

But post-Citizens United, there is a lot of hidden money in the game.

6. I know who/what I am looking for...

Earlier this year, a rightie tried to call me lazy for being a dem. It's kinda crazy the way they lash out. Well, back in school, there were these creepy twins a year older than me. I had no idea they were related (different last names, etc) I just found out they were, and want to make sure they are not running a seafood place before I take my business there.

5. The secretaries of state's office

will have (public) records of LLC's / Corporations in that state; however, depending on the state they can be quite limited. In most states its only the corporate officers that are listed -- not owners -- although for small businesses they're probably the same. In some states they only have a registered agent listed to receive process (lawsuits) which maybe an attorney or other similar firm.

8. Its very buried in their website

I found the links you'll need:

Online services: http://www.dat.state.md.us/sdatweb/datanote.html

Charter Record Search (this will have owners / agents): http://sdatcert3.resiusa.org/ucc-charter/CharterSearch_f.aspx

Good luck!
