'Please spare my little girl': How Mexico's fearless female mayor sacrificed herself to save her daughter's life as she was abducted by drug gang, tortured and executed

The woman mayor who was kidnapped and murdered by a Mexican drug gang pleaded with her attackers for her young daughter’s life, it emerged today.

Maria Santos Gorrostieta, who had already survived two assassination attempts, was driving the child to school at around 8.30am when she was ambushed by a car in the city of Morelia.

The 36-year-old was hauled from her vehicle and physically assaulted as horrified witnesses watched, according to newspaper El Universal.
They described how she begged for her child to be left alone and then appeared to get into her abductors’ car willingly.

The little girl was left wailing as her mother was driven away on Monday November 12.

For the next week, her frantic family waited by the phone for a ransom call that never came.
Gorrostieta’s body – stabbed, burned, battered and bound at wrist and ankle – would finally be found eight days on dumped by a roadside in San Juan Tararameo, Cuitzeo Township.

She left behind her daughter and two sons as well as her second husband Nereo Delgado Patinoran.

Hailed as a heroine of the 21st century, her death has prompted much soul-searching in a country ravaged by violence.

6. Mexico

is out of control. Something needs to be done.

One of the quickest ways to put an end to this kind of nonsense is to legalize drugs. Period.

9. The cartels have begun engaging in traditional mafia activities

The heads of many of the cartels have been killed or captured. When this happens, the murderous cells of hitmen working for the kingpin no longer have drug shipments to protect. The income starved cells take over local drug sales and begin extorting business and kidnapping people for money. These mini-mafias degenerate into Internecine warfare, fighting each other over the crumbs. This is what happened in Acapulco, which has degenerated into total chaos with several gangs fighting over local drug sale crumbs. Acapulco has been abandoned by tourists because it is too dangerous. This is happening all over central Mexico and along the Pacific coast.

It's a very sad situation. It has to play out before it can end.

16. Well, how about people NOT using drugs?

Maybe those who use drugs can do some soul-searching for a change and realize what the drive for drugs does to innocent lives?

Yeah, thinking about the effect on others.

17. You Drug Warriors are the cause of ALL of this.

People have used "drugs" since the dawn of time. That hasn't changed one whit. What has changed are that the AUTHORITARIANS (and their enablers) have gained power.

It is the PROHIBITIONISTS who are responsible for this, just like the PROHIBITIONISTS were responsible for the horrible violence they unleashed during alcohol prohibition. However, unlike then, now we have internet posters who want to double down on prohibition, despite the clear lessons of the past.

19. Well, how about YOU not telling others what to put in their bodies??

Being on this board, I would imagine you're pro-choice, aren't you? you know, the whole "my body, my choice" thing? Let's look at your response in that context, shall we?

"Well, how about people NOT using drugs getting abortions?

Maybe those who use drugs get abortions can do some soul-searching for a change and realize what the drive for drugs abortions does to innocent lives?

Yeah, thinking about the effect on others. "

What about all those doctors, nurses and patients who get shot up or blown up outside abortion clinics, usually by whacko christofascist extremists? Should we be "thinking about the effect on others" here??

Do you drink alcohol? What about the 100's of thousands of lives lost and/or affected by violent, drunken alcoholics who beat their wives and/or kids every year? What about the drunks who get behind the wheel of a car, then kill some innocent victims in a crash (that the drunks usually somehow survive more often than not). Should we be "thinking about the effect on others" here, too??

The real soul searching needs to be focused on ending the bogus "War on drugs", which isn't working one bit, only wasting hundreds of millions of dollars, and eyeing legalization, along with treatment and education. Legalization removes the profit motive from the cartels and street gangs, which reduces crime, and saves untold millions/billions in prosecutions and incarceration of recreational drug users.

RE-READ my original post, and then get that mighty chip off your shoulder. Get a grip.
What other presumptions are you going to make about me that are not based in reality but only on your agenda?

Yeah, poor druggies shouldn't have to soul-search about their addictions ever, huh?

10. what a hero

Any loving parent would rather die themselves than let their child be harmed, but it's pretty damned courageous to actually walk the walk. There's very little to be glad about in this story except that the murderers actually didn't harm the little girl for whom her mother sacrificed her life.

She must have been an incredible woman.

12. I'm not sure why it's so important to point out that she's a 'she' in the headline.

Are women not supposed to be fearless? Is it a greater achievement for a woman, rather than a man, to be fearless?

Seems a little insulting to women to suggest that being a fearless woman is 'special' in some way.

But hey, she proved that she was more courageous than the cowardly animals that resort to terror and murder to protect their trade. I truly hope she had the chance to spit in their faces.... and that one day they will meet the end they deserve.

So let's stop treating women like 'lesser' or '2nd class' humans by writing headlines like: "How Mexico's Fearless Female Mayor Sacrificed Herself....", and just call them 'heroes' regardless of gender.

Look at the Susan Rice reaction. When is the last time Obama did that sort of thing for Holder or Geithner.

30. Holder and Geitner weren't handed a set of lies

to report to the media that turned the affair into a witch-hunt.

I really don't think Obama's reaction would have been that much different if a man in his cabinet were in the exact same position.

13. sadly

The Mexican mobs have become international in scope; just legalizing drugs will NOT kill them,as frankly, Mexican corporations hire them to do dirty work. Think about that when Bimbo bakeries buys out Hostess.
