Widely Distributed Police Sketch Versus Real Life Suspect

Salvatore Perrone of Staten Island was recently arrested as a suspect in the brutal murders of three Brooklyn shopkeepers. Before Perrone's arrest, NYPD released to media the following sketch of the "black latino" suspect, which was distributed widely in New York. Update: the sketch depicts a separate person of interest from Salvatore Perrone, but the sketch was widely used by media in association with the murders prior to Wednesday's arrest, and has been called out on tumblr as appearing to be a "stock negro criminal" drawing.

Mr. Perrone was arrested on Wednesday. This is what he looks like:

3. They had a number of person of interests in this case.

Sketch is clearly of someone else, who probably was in the area but had nothing to do with the crimes.

4. I remember the fed buildings bombing, the search was for a dark, middle-eastern male

Though Timothy McVeigh was blond and Terry Nichols was a pale, freckled brown-head.

5. That was the person in the white van that people described.

A lot of unanswered questions in the Oklahoma bombing

6. White vans are very common.

Sometimes people see them at crime scene but they have no connection to the crime.

7. The people at the rental place gave the description, right?

Yes, a lot of unanswered questions. Maybe more like preferential treatment for homegrown terrorists.

Yes...

"Maybe more like preferential treatment for homegrown terrorists"

I don't see this at all , with the Patriot act in force they don't care who they nail to a cross.

8. We recently had some jack ass shooting at people along he I-96 corridor here ...

The sketch released was just as far off (as was a photo taken at a gas station/ convenience store)

The sketch/photo was of a blond, fair, balding husky guy ... the actual accused is a person of Mediterranean descent, with a full head of dark hair .... possibly husky.

Any one of us could end up in a sketch by simply being in the vicinity where a crime has taken place.

11. Pretty heavy on the charcoal shading in the sketch, isn't there?

Not surprised in the least.

13. wish i could find the fail picture of the newscaster with the photofit of a rape suspect

That was eerily similar to the guy doing the news. Eyewitnesses are notoriously unreliable in photofits unless they spent a lot of time looking at the person and you get them early.

18. Did they catch anyone that LOOKED like him?

I swear I saw a movie that did something like this and the end result was soooo funny.

Just can't remember the name of the movie
