Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

Walmart is striving to become a national "Company Store."

There was a time in the 20th Century where workers in coal mines and other industries were paid in chits only redeemable at the company store. With the new emphases on driving down wages and pricing that other retailers cannot match you have to wonder if there is some sort of collusion to make this happen.

Two covers because they are both great.

One of the comments from the Ford video:

"This story is the kind of reason that unions were so desperately needed when they were formed. People working for scrip instead of money, forced to pay insane markups as they had to shop at the company store, no safety precautions, child labor...always remember, because no one should have to be in that position."

1. WalMart wants to squash every other business so they will be the ONLY place to shop.

It's an evil place on all levels. You can't get more evil.

2. In ten years, there will be one retail dept store in many areas. Like PRC, only privately-owned.

The one world store, Wal*Mart.

9. That's not like the PRC.

There are lots of private, mixed ownership and public stores in China. Small retail is diverse and thriving in almost the entire country.

4. I don't think so,

I never shop there and I know a lot of others who do not either,
The crime rate in their parking lot is pretty high and they are known for mismarking what is ontheir shelf, when you get to the counter the price is higher.
