DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) -- At least 112 people were killed in a fire that raced through a multi-story garment factory just outside of Bangladesh's capital, an official said Sunday.

The blaze broke out at the seven-story factory operated by Tazreen Fashions late Saturday. By Sunday morning, firefighters had recovered 100 bodies, fire department Operations Director Maj. Mohammad Mahbub told The Associated Press.

He said another 12 people who had suffered injuries after jumping from the building to escape the fire later died at hospitals. The death toll could rise as the search for victims was continuing, he said.

Local media reported that up to 124 people were killed in the fire. The cause of the blaze was not immediately clear, and authorities have ordered an investigation.

1. Perhaps this will be the thing

that prompts India to get some laws in protecting workers. The Triangle Shirt Factory fire forced politicians to get serious about laying down safety laws in working environments in the U.S.

2. WalMart and Kik (in Europe)

So if you goole this factory "Tazreen Fashions Limited" it is found to be DIRECT supplier to WalMart...and Kik a textile discounter in Germany. a PDF specifically has a header of Kik and WalMart and describes the capabilities of this particular factory...so here is another great example of the real human cost of the smoke and mirrors that is "low prices"...there is always a price to pay and someone has to pay it. Which is better? Higher wages and slightly higher prices or lower prices and human suffering?

5. Why am I not surprised at this?

It's the first thing I suspected - that the factory was owned by some greedy megacorporation.

The second thing that came to mind: The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire.
