Bangladesh factory fire kills at least 121 (cheap clothes for the western market)

"We've found 112 dead bodies this morning," fire brigade director general, Brigadier General Abu Nayeem Mohammad Shahidullah said.

"We resumed our search this morning and found the bodies lying on different floors of the factory building," he said.

The fire broke out in the ground-floor warehouse of the multi-storey Tazreen Fashion factory 30 kilometres north of Dhaka on Saturday evening, trapping hundreds of workers on the upper floors, police said.

Police inspector Mostofa Kamal had previously said that nine workers died and about 100 workers were injured.

Mr Kamal said many workers jumped from the factory's upper floors to escape the flames before firefighters arrived to put the blaze out.

4. Moi aussi...

On a different note, was in the NE Kingdom today, snow fluries flying as we left the hockey rink... a beautiful proto-winter day. Cheers from one VT'er to another.

5. Trump's shirts at Macy's are made in Bangladesh.

Wonder if this factory made them. And I wonder why Trump is okay with giving jobs to a mostly Muslim nation now that I think about it, since he's a RW birther idiot and all.

7. A long-time DUer like yourself really should be more savvy, at this point,

about what keeps threads kicked. We all know it's flamebait stories that get the most repsonses. The lack of repsonses has little to do with how important a story is or how people feel about something. But I'm pretty sure you know that.

8. I don't think flamebait stories are the only stories that garner

a lot of responses, and yes I'm so saddened and horrified by this that I'd hoped that this thread would be more active.

11. You have a point. I would think this would get at least a little more attention.

Maybe people just don't know what to say.

9. This is so horrible.

I am thinking the people that are screaming about the embassy shootings won't even bother to read this story.

Cheap clothes are not worth this. The article says something about the companies that buy the clothes from here perform "audits', but this does not include inspections. These companies know the safety issues in these factories are bad, but they don't want to actually SEE it.

I feel bad for the people who have to work in places like this. Especially now. No one should have to put their health and safety on the line just so Americans and Europeans should have access to cheap clothes.

12. Every worker on every factory line

in these exploited countries should get a copy of The Jungle in their language.
