NATIONAL WALMART PROTEST REACHES EAST COUNTY AS LEAFLETTERS TARGET SHOPPERS AT GROSSMONT CENTER AND

By Nadin Abbott

November 23, 2012 (La Mesa)-- Black Friday today was marked by a nationwide protest at 1,000 Walmart stores, including Grossmont Center in La Mesa.

Walmart workers are not unionized. So local volunteers and members of United Food & Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) staged the protest to give voice to grievances of Walmart employees who say they have been pressured to keep quiet and not participate in the demonstrations.

Some workers said they are afraid of losing their jobs—and those fears are not unfounded, since the company calls the protesters “outside agitators” and contends they only want to make trouble for Walmart.

Ashley Hardie, media spokesperson for Walmart, told ECM, “The reality is that there are only a handful of associates, at a handful of stores scattered across the country that are participating in these UFCW made for TV events.”

1. Oh, my...

If she adds they're "taking drugs in their milk and Nescafe" I think she'll have a full gaddafi.

3. That was a choice quote. I know

...I know. And 1000, out of 3000+ is not precisely a handful.

I need some sleep... day started early... labor, Wally World and the rest should fear, this, is waking up. This is just the second labor action on the oposite side of the street in the same week. I am not kidding.

9. A full Gaddafi, LOL!

What a blast from the past, eh?

By the way, there were dozens of striking W-M employees at just ONE protest I attended today (in Paramount, CA, where 9 protesters were arrested).

16. W-M's U.S. Pres. & CEO said the same, but evidence of walkouts in SoCal alone contradict their BS

"We estimate that less than 50 associates participated in the protest nationwide. In fact, this year, roughly the same number of associates missed their scheduled shift as last year," (Bill Simon, Walmart U.S. president and chief executive officer) said.

But a SoCal newspaper reports that 17 employees walked out of the Paramount, CA Wal-Mart alone, and organizers said 50 associates walked out just at 5 SoCal stores.

Also, Wal-Mart seems to be pulling rosy reports of Black Friday sales out of somewhere besides reality:

Although representatives from Walmart U.S. touted record Black Friday events with larger crowds than last year, shoppers who were inside the Paramount store said it seemed empty and quiet inside.

"It wasn't really crowded," said South Gate resident Steve Alvizo. "We saw (the protest) when we parked. We just wanted to look at the deals but there's not really any deals."

Alvizo said he will likely not return to Walmart because of the protests.

"I think they deserve better pay than they are getting," he said.

Opinions were almost evenly divided on whether one would cross a picket line, or a rally, outside a Walmart, though the vast majority of people agreed workers earning less than $10 an hour without benefits had a right to be frustrated.

18. I was tempted to walk inside

Bat Walmart was not that open to letting reporters, nationwide mind you, into the stores.

19. After being out there for a long time,I had to take a leak

Rather than going into the W-M, I went to the Carl's Jr. in the shopping center. I was prepared to buy a coffee (while keeping an eye out for my bus), but that wasn't necessary. And I fuggin HATE Carl's Jr.!

BillO probably would say you can't explain that!

you know. So I take it, no comment on the content, just an attack on grammar. Worthy of something else.

Especially about the huge factor of lifting so many out of poverty, and the low cost it would have to the company.

22. Excellent article, thank you ...

So they call their own workers 'outside agitators'? Looks like they're not endearing themselves to the public but I guess this is the first time they had to deal with something like this and don't realize that speaking to the public in such a demeaning way about their employees is not the same as doing so at their private board meetings.
