Consumer demand for goods and services by the middle class and poor create over 60% of the jobs in this country. Poor people still have to spend money on food, clothing, transportation, utilities, medical treatment, drugs, etc.. While poor people often get help from the government, that doesn't come close to meeting all their needs. The financial help they do get from the government also pumps hundreds of billions of dollars a year into the economy to help create jobs.
If all consumer spending by poor people came to abrupt end, I'm guessing it would cost our country 5 million jobs or more as consumer spending took a massive hit when almost 50 million Americans suddenly stopped spending.
