I got nuthin' based on sales, but did treat myself to something (but it ought not accrue to a Black Friday sale):
On Wednesday I had to replace my iPhone and saw the ***iPad Mini***
And, having had my older iPad stolen in September, and with insurance money in hand, I decided to get one today!
I have heard about people who waited in line for three LCD TVs and whatnot.
Would have gotten it yesterday but every Apple outlet was closed as part of the build up.
So...
What did YOU get, if anything???
And props to you if you got nothing at all.
BTW-- I'm leaving now to the local Walmart to see if they're picketing.
I'll be glad to stand with them.

My other one expired today, and talked to the owner the day before, thinking I would come in on Friday and pick up something - told me the law says it ends on the day, so Nov 23rd was the day, so I'm fucked. I sent out for the new one on October 31st - the only off day I had.
Which store did you go to?

(21,748 posts)Not the greatest selection of weed but what they have (anywhere from 7-20 strains on a given day) has always been excellent quality. Their house hash is the best I've ever had though, they carry pre-packaged hash that is not bad but the stuff they make themselves is a true treat.

but I did peak into Walmart, and it was deserted.
I saw 4 cops in the place, and aisles and aisles of NO customers.

Also, the one I looked at had no pickets or workers outside.

Right now they are selling raffle tickets for $1 for some pet items, and all the proceeds will go to help feed the pets of homeless people. So each time I go in, I just tell them to add a couple of tickets to the bill.)
Also got a pattern from Joanns, milk and meat from the vitamin/grocery store and a few items from Trader Joes. Stayed far away from the mall areas...way too much humanity there for me.

Also got backing for a quilt, presents for family, especially grandchildren. Tried to get a bunch of gift cards from a regional grocery store--they wouldn't take a credit card & only $50 on a check--what's with that? (2,135 posts)Went to WalMart last night with my mom *ducks thrown objects* I know, I know... She camped outside of the video games (which I won't know what she got me until Christmas morning) that were in the dairy aisle while I parked myself in produce where the movies were.
I managed to grab Alien, Aliens, The Princess Bride and all three Lord of the Rings movies on Blu Ray, along with Taken on regular DVD. I passed up Prometheus for the two Alien films and if they had The Thing 2011 on Blu Ray instead of regular DVD I would have grabbed it as well. I also picked up a bit of clothing for my mom, as well. Things were pretty civil for the most part, with the main thing being "Can you grab x for me?" or "Can you grab me a copy of x while I go for y? Do you want it, too?" That said, I had two empty carts swiped from me while waiting and I had to go all the way to Lawn and Garden to find an empty one so we could check out.
My mom headed out later and got me a tablet at home improvement store Menards at 5:00 and we headed out together to get a metal and wood shelf for my comic room (I use them to put my comic boxes on) and look at a computer desk at Office Depot. I didn't like it, so we passed on it.

I've already ordered most of my Christmas presents online from various craftspeople and other designers and artisans. SUPPORT THE ARTS - BY SUPPORTING THE ARTISTS! Hint: etsy.com (!) You can be certain your recipient WON'T have anything like it.
Also - HERE IS A GREAT GIFT IDEA if you don't want to add any more clutter to somebody's Christmas, and it will really help a worthy cause. Defenders of Wildlife! For as little as $15 you can adopt a sea turtle or wolf or polar bear or other endangered creature in the name of the person you're honoring. This is PERFECT for friends or in-laws or siblings - with small children. Because for $25 you can get an adoption in their name, plus a little plush toy. Sent 'em to my nieces and nephews when they were little. Each year I'd pick a different animal and they'd get a new toy for their collections.

I might have to buy more sewing thread and some extra tights tomorrow, though. We shall see.
What do you think of the iPad mini? I am seriously considering getting one.

There was a very small picket outside the local walmart. About 6 people, mostly with seiu signs. 10 minutes later, 2 left. But to be fair, it was raining cats and dogs.

Bought absolutely nothing today. I don't plan on buying anything for Xmas presents either. Several years ago I decided to just give the kids money -- money is never the wrong size, wrong color, wrong style and saves me from having to go to the mall. Win/win in my book.

(15,396 posts)She went out about 8 yesterday on a date with her best friend (the do this every year) breakfast and lunch with some shopping thrown in. She come home with mostly clothing for the kids, and dumped it all in the trunk of my Accord.
We dropped both kids off at 7 and went out on a date night for ourselves....Late, late we stopped in wal-turd and picked up a few misc toys and more clothes.
Didn't really pick up anything worth mentioning, but I did order my daughter a nice compound bow off amazon. We also stopped by and looked at a motorcycle I bought for our son.
Our first two day at home on this extended weekend have been great, looking forward to two more just like the past two.
Have a great weekend.

(2,679 posts)I think in my 46 years I have shopped (if you want to call it that - more looking then looking then buying) twice on black friday. Once went I was about 14 and then the last time was about 10 years ago.
This black friday we needed milk, oj and our printer broke this week. So I sent the hubby to costco and he got just milk. oj and a printer.
I hate shopping. I hate grocery shopping. I hate shopping for clothes. I despise shopping for a car. I loathe shopping for furniture. I don't mind shopping for musical instruments or things that I can build.
The reason I hate it, I don't like the crowds. People don't act like people when they see the word 'sale' or the phrase 'buy one get one free.' Their eyes glaze over and they start to act crazy. Scares me so I don't take part unless forced to.
Besides on black friday there is usually football, and I love football. An added bonus this year natgo had a doomsday prepper marathon (I like this show I think it is funny and sometimes I learn something - mostly though what I learn as nothing to do with prepping, but they do have many good green ideas). I really wish a&a would stop the storage wars, every time I turn it there that damn show is on, and if it isn't storage wars its parking wars which is just as stupid. History channel is no better these days, with american pickers and pawn shop - I think they were doing counting cars of some bs. At least history channel 2 had ancient aliens (it was about mormons of all things last night) and some up coming armageddon show.
But I was saved from all that because hbo was showing all the matrix movies.

(46,697 posts)A mix of all races and cultures. Makes me feel like home. This year I had to drive because hubby is injured and taking pain medicine, so how mom was going to tackle the parking on a day where there are ten cars per parking lot was the first test. Frantic, frantic, frantic. After five minutes, the strategy was to stay in a parking line and wait for someone to come out. After five more minutes of waiting it was frantic, frantic frantic.
So I see someone's light at the end of the line of parked cars go on and I race to put my blinker on. But this person goes no where for another few minutes. The conversation in the car goes dire. "You should have stayed and waited, look, behind us someone is backing out." So I stand my ground because the person in the car still has her rear lights on. While we're still waiting two cars down from her a family arrives and begins to load the car with packages. The mother looks at me apologetically as she takes down a baby crib that's built like a transformer.
Then, the car that was waiting forever begins to back out, straight out, and from there, begins a seven point turn to drive the car away from us.
We finally park to the tune, of "Next year mom isn't going to drive. Dad, you're not allowed to get injured again."
It was a great experience, except that we saw vestiges of what life will be like during the Apocalypse. My husband had a chance to order the last three slices of pieces at Sbarros, and when the lady put them up on the counter, some woman came up from the back and said, "I was waiting for those" and took them and quickly paid for them. My husband was not quick enough to figure out he got bested. What can I say. He's on medication. But the same thing happened to me at Starbucks. I wanted a coffee to make sure I would be alert driving back. The woman behind me jumped the line and grabbed someone else's drink. The system is that imperfect.
Best gift ever: I think I bought a knock off Sketcher Topsider, that was sold at real Sketcher prices, but it was too adorable to pass up. They're black with side panel in black and white houndstooth. Also, white soles. It's a x-mas gift, and, since we're on a budget, I got to decide if I wanted it because once we hit our limit, we're done. The good news was that hubby encouraged me to get the real brown knock-off that was sold as a knock-off for 25 dollars. They make great dog walking shows, except I don't like to wear the expensive ones because they wear down too quickly.

(40,416 posts)One home made double burger with curly fries, the latter not home made, but nevertheless yummy. Bag of nice tortilla chips and jar of salsa for movie night.
Two pints of gin and a bottle of dry vermouth. One pint mostly consumed last night for a martini movie night.
All bought at my local (six mile drive each way) country store in the Manistee National Forest. I also found out that Early Black Friday morning some person or persons broke into that store and burgled it.
This upset me very much, especially since the owner is a long time family friend who struggles heartily to keep things running efficiently. They have all sorts of things there that a convenience store would never stock. And some asshole(s) decided that Thanksgiving is all about taking what you want.
Pisses me off very much! My friend doesn't deserve this. She is the kind of person who does good for our rural community.

(17,339 posts)A 15" MacBook Pro upgraded to 16GB RAM and a 13" MacBook Pro - AppleCare on both. Picked them up on Sunday and working on the 15" now. Replaced two MacBooks that were 3-4 years old and starting to go wonky. Traded them in and got $100 each, a $100 discount on the 15" and a $200 discount on the 13". Paid for data transfer so we could start using them right away today.
Don't normally do the "Black Friday" thing but we stayed out of the crush and got a good deal as well. And supported a local retailer.

(68,644 posts)I don't consider Apple to be playing the Black Friday in quite the dangerous way that other retailers do, but I sure was pissed off to learn that they were closed all day Thanksgiving!
And I was happy that they had what I wanted in stock and no crazy lines, though they were offering vouchers for set up instead of the usual "let me help you set up your new Mac" service.

In fact I was a bit pissed the one time they wouldn't replace my out-of-warranty iPhone that wasn't holding a charge as long as it used to.
But you are right about a lot of the staff and their attitudes.
Not necessary, to have attitudes.

(17,339 posts)However my local store has really taken good care of us. In fact when we did the trade-in's they allowed money despite the fact that batteries on both were shot.
I think the big problem with the Apple Store is that the staff turnover is probably pretty high and so there's no real way to develop a relationship with them.
