Congressman-Elect Alan Grayson Shows Up At Florida Wal-Mart To Support Strikers

The great Wal-Mart strikes of Black Friday 2012 have begun. Workers across the nation are walking out, and thousands of Americans are expected in demonstrate in solidarity today and tomorrow.

In Orlando, Congressman-elect Alan Grayson joined the strikers. Here’s a photo of him walking Lisa Lopez off the job tonight (thanks to United for Respect at Walmart for the photo):

Or at least unemployment.

Any way people here have small companies that can employ them? I hope so.

There are at least 3 major actions in L.A. tomorrow, and the one I'm going to has 182 L.A. Occupiers signed up to join the strikers.

It may have been the largest Black Friday Wal-Mart protest in the country!

I need to put up a report and photo thread, but I'm still too wiped out to think about that--or to face the task of culling my 127 photos down to a reasonable number to post. I don't even know how I'm even staying up right now.

This was the Paramount, CA protest at which 9 protesters--including a retired pastor--were arrested. DUer Fire Walk With Me posted a thread focusing on a photo of the pastor's arrest:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021874379

For anyone who may be interested, my 127-photo album from the protest is here (best viewed as a slideshow):

http://s948.photobucket.com/albums/ad321/pinboy3niner/WalMart%20Strike_Paramount%20CA%2011_23_12/

I'm not a good photographer, and mainly tried to focus on the diversity of the individuals and groups participating in the protest. In addition, I photographed the arrests as the L.A. County Sheriff's Department executed them, but my vantage point was less than ideal.

When I say I'm not a good photographer, I'm not kidding. After it was over and protesters gradually were dispersing, I was sitting on the grass by the main entrance to W-M's parking lot when, suddenly, a Sheriff's Dept. truck with riot gear-clad deputies hanging off the sides passed RIGHT in front of me. It would have made for a great photo, but I fumbled for the camera I'd already put away in my backpack and by the time I got to it, the best I could do was a long shot of the back of the vehicle before it disappeared from view...

C'est la vie...

P.S. - A local newspaper report gives some idea of worker participation in the strike that contradict's Wal-Mart's claims, and also addresses the effectiveness of Wal-Mart protests:

So I swiped it and shared it on facebook as contrast to our teabagger rep, Cory Gardner, who would be more likely to support Walmart's suppression of its workers.

Wouldn't it be great if LABOR enjoyed the support of the whole Party?

One can NOT be FOR "Free Trade",
and support Organized LABOR at the same time.
The two positions ARE mutually exclusive.

The Graven Image on the altar....

of the new Church of the Giant Invisible Hand.

This new religion demands absolute Blind Faith Devotion to an invisible Deity for which
no concrete evidence exists.
In fact, all real world evidence contradicts the existence of this new deity, yet our leadership uses this deity to justify Economic Policy that negatively affects Billions of people,
but enhances the fortunes of the privileged handful who sit on the gilded thrones of the 1%.

Sorry, Virginia,
but there is NO Giant Invisible Hand,
and no such thing as "Free Trade" or "Free Markets".
Like other religions with invisible deities,
this new religion is a SCAM invented by The RICH to get more money for themselves.

But am I the only one who thinks this is one of the reasons American Corperations export jobs overseas? If you have a job, freaking keep it until you have another one lined up! I have a couple of relatives who have worked at Walmart for a few years and they are doing better than me. IDK... grill me I guess.

And all the contributions that Unions made to America's overall quality of life? Were their strikes wrong in your opinion? Should they have just kept their heads down and mouths shut and been happy they had jobs at all? What do you think YOUR life would be like right now if they had?

because American workers have more freedom to demand good working conditions than China for example. So what is your answer, to reduce those freedoms to match China? For workers to voluntarily accept worse and worse conditions to match China?
