Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

Please DON'T feed this troll:

November 28th: call-in day to defend Social Security and Medicare

Agitators and riff-raff. Everyone knows that Social Security and Medicare are already safe, because if it wasn't then it would have been cut already. Am I right? And anyway, if they are tweaked a tiny bit, they need it. Am I right?

Anyone else smell the fingerprints of that difficult woman, Elizabeth Warren, on this crass effort?

Regards,

Third-Way Manny

3. Don't you know?

Anyone that dares hold our elected Democrats' feet to the fire is surely a troll.

Elected Democrats would NEVER even THINK of betraying the working-class...

6. I couldn't agree more.

Just more purist hand-wringing from the hair-on-fire crowd. It's going to take a lot of courage to cut Social Security or Medicare, so it's more important than ever to let them know we have "got their back".

7. WHAT?

That's bullshit! Social Security and Medicare would be just fine if they would lift the cap on money over 100 thousand or so being taxed. Bullshit. We need to leave these EARNED benefits alone!

Courage, my ass.

11. It's not called "the third rail" for nothing

Of course it takes guts to cut SS and Medicare, just think of the backlash against the legislators, I'm sure they're all shaking in their boots at the very thought of it.

14. I understand, but there's a good reason for this backlash. These are EARNED benefits.

I don't think it's brave of our Dems to cut these benefits. They are caving in to the opposition, and I'm sick of it.

That's why he failed to fix the economy, and we lost WWII.

19. You lose impact, when you start calling about things that don't need calling about.

Obama and Reid have both stated the Social Security is off the table. So you either believe them, or you don't. I do.

Medicare is a different matter.

No need to call about Social Security.

20. I take it you haven't heard of the chained CPI?

A disaster for people who commit the sin of living too long. If you aren't worried about that, ask your senators to cosponsor the Begich bill to scrap the cap.

and an idiot. Calling him about anything is a total waste of time. The people he works for don't include people like me.

25. No need? Maybe, but we don't know. No harm in calling about it, either. So why

tell people not to call?

You don't 'lose impact calling about things that don't need to be called about.'

Reminding the PTB where the people stand is always imperative.

They forget so easily.

27. They haven't stated that SS is off the table. You have to watch the language

they use. They have said they will oppose any 'cuts' to SS. Chained CPI is a cut. Raising the retirement is a cut. And none of that is necessary and they better realize we know all the tricks, the special language doesn't hide their intent.

What we want is what you just said. We want SS out of any discussion about the Deficit. It had nothing to do with the deficit and we don't understand why it was ever a part of the discussion in the first place.

The fact that they keep mentioning it when they talk about 'the fiscal cliff' and the deficit, means that when they say 'no cuts' they do not really mean 'no cuts'.

They most likely already made a deal for the lame duck Congress, which is why everyone is gearing up to let them know that we know all the little tricks and we want them to take SS off that table completely.

24. You are right as always, TW

And I mean that in both senses of the word.

It's too bad that more DUers don't get with the program and realize that leftism is just so twentieth century, the dirty hippies are all gone now mostly turned into geriatric yuppies and we can continue our journey to Saint Reagan's shining city on the hill surrounded by a thousand points of light.

Here we are in the second decade of the twenty first century and so many Democrats are still stuck in the thinking of the previous millennium with all those alphabet presidents, you know JKF, MLK and DFR or whatever.

There was a little girl at Thanksgiving dinner last night who did not want to eat anything other than dessert, she got one bite of nasty green stuff in her mouth and that was it, she had it there the rest of the night it seemed like, crying because she was not going to swallow those peas in order so she could have a bit of dessert and mom would not let her spit them back out (mom was losing patience with a very obstinate young lady).

So the moral of the story is if you want the dessert of a minimum wage part time job you need to dutifully swallow your dinner of boiled bootstraps and partially thawed austerity peas, mom is starting to get more than a bit annoyed with your petulant and fractious behavior.
