(Republican US Sen.) Chambliss Edges Away From Norquist Anti-Tax Pledge

Last edited Thu Nov 22, 2012, 03:39 PM - Edit history (1)

Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia said solving the nation's fiscal woes may mean breaking the anti-tax pledge he signed years ago.

Chambliss signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, penned by conservative activist Grover Norquist.

"I care more about my country than I do about a 20-year-old pledge," Chambliss says. "If we do it his way then we'll continue in debt, and I just have a disagreement with him about that."

Chambliss spoke with 13WMAZ's Kenny Burgamy.

Now Chambliss says he wants to do what it takes to right the U.S. fiscal ship, even if that means findings ways to raise revenue, which Norquist strongly opposes.

Wow! In fact, Chambliss has criticized Norquist before, as Politico reported in June 2011:

Some Republicans who are open to raising tax revenue have faced the wrath of Norquist — and they are none too pleased.

“Grover Norquist has no credibility, so I don’t respond to him,” Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) told POLITICO. “He doesn’t deserve being responded to.”

The WMAZ comments section has this on the top:

Good. Never should have sold out his ability to make rational decisions on a case by case basis to a third party anyway. The only pledge that a US Representative or Senator should be beholden to is the one which they give to their constituents and the nation.

Think Progress has more about the story.

So much in politics happening the day before Thanksgiving huh? First Jesse Jackson Jr. resigns now a senator walks off the Norquist pledge?

3. We need some congressmen to do the same

Though a republican bailing on the pledge sets the example and makes it easier for others, We need Congressmen, not senators.
