Kelsey Grammer says "Boss" Cancelled because he is Republican

He has made no secret of his political leanings and Kelsey Grammer believes that his support for the Republican party may have led to the failure of his latest television series.

An active campaigner for the GOP, Grammer was a guest at President George W. Bush's first inauguration, campaigned for John McCain in the 2008 general election and endorsed Michele Bachmann for the Republican nomination for President in 2012.

Boss, which also stars Martin Donovan, Connie Nielsen and Kathleen Robertson, earned Grammer a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a drama earlier this year but the series had low ratings from the start, garnering just 659,000 viewers for its premiere and a season high of 440,000 viewers - a far cry from the 1.25 million viewers who tuned in during the first season of Starzí other drama, Magic City.

haven't a bunch of other shows got cancelled also ? don't most shows seem to get cancelled these days ? maybe it's because of the whole REpublican crap about profit being the only thing that matters. even pushing low quality crap as long as it makes the guys at the top some money.

102. The first season was great, the second was flirting with shark jumping.

The nuance of the first season was abandoned for more violence and BIG plot shifts in the second. I imagine they were attempting to goose the ratings.

I would have given up on season two were it not for the eye candy known as Kathleen Robertson.?w=640

77. The show itself was pretty Republican.

Power hungry ruthless big city mayor character may not be what people want to watch after too many years of fraudulent politics.
Then throw in the over the top medical secret of the plot.

Kellsey WAS a good actor in the role, cannot deny that.
Plot and storyline...nahhhh.

Especially when he turned his own daughter in for drug dealing.

He was good in that role.

But Frasier's character was good. But at that point, Grammer wasn't a complete douche who felt everyone was out to get him because he's Republican (didn't he also blame being a Republican on not being nominated for an Emmy during Boss - forgetting that he won Emmys for Frasier?).

He was also great as Sideshow Bob on The Simpsons.

impression. "Double cappacino for me! Non-fat milk and just enough foam to be aesthetically pleasing, but not so much that it leaves a mustach!" I have it down, and coming from a big bearded guy like me, it can bring the house down! Usually, someone will point at me and yell Niles!

I get that in maybe once a year when someone is offering to make an expresso run. I'll order that even when I don't want one, just to go for the laughs.

One week, it'd be really great and the next, an absolute pile of shit. It was cancelled probably because of low ratings. I watched the first season religiously, enjoyed it and then just kind of got bored.

You can read reviews of the show here:

http://www.avclub.com/tvclub/tvshow/boss,281/

You'll see a lot of erratic grading ... B+ episodes followed by Ds.

I knew he was a Republican (disappointing since I love Frasier), but I assumed he was just one because of taxes or something. But endorsing a total nut like Bachman? I find that shocking.

Obama leads in all the polls except for two highly skewed ones? He won because he stole it and people just want free stuff.

Abandon people in Hurricane Katrina? It's the gays' fault for angering God.

A crappy show with abysmally low ratings gets cancelled? It's because the star is a Republican.

Imagine that.. a Whining Con..not taking responsibility but blaming it on being a teabagger(if he indeed endorsed Bachmann like was stated upthread)! Shocking.

See a pattern here?

64. Could be that many think he's creepy.. Keeps getting barely legal girls pregnant ...

Grammer has been married four times and has five children and one grandchild as of 2012. His first marriage, to dance instructor Doreen Alderman, lasted from 1982 to 1990, although they were separated for the last six years of that period. They have one daughter, Spencer Grammer (born October 9, 1983),
After this marriage to Alderman, Grammer had a daughter, Kandace Greer (who is currently a cast member on MTV's hit show Awkward.), with hair and makeup stylist Barrie Buckner

His second marriage, to stripper Leigh-Anne Csuhany in September 1992, lasted one year. Grammer says that she was abusive and fired a gun at him, and that after talk of divorce, she attempted suicide, which resulted in the miscarriage of their child.

In August 1997 Grammer married Camille Donatacci, a former Playboy model. They met on a blind date in 1996. They have a daughter, Mason Olivia (born October 24, 2001), and a son, Jude Gordon (born August 28, 2004), both born to a surrogate mother.

On August 12, 2010, Grammer announced that he was going to be a father for the fifth time with his girlfriend Kayte Walsh, a British flight attendant who is 25 years his junior. However, in October, Grammer announced that Walsh had miscarried six weeks earlier. The couple announced their engagement in December 2010. At the beginning of February, Grammer and Walsh booked the ballroom at the Plaza Hotel for their wedding, at a cost of more than $100,000 for the reception, despite rumors of Grammer's divorce not being finalized. The couple wed there on February 25, 2011, two weeks after the finalization of his third divorce. In January 2012, Grammer announced that he and Walsh were expecting twins. On July 13, 2012, Walsh gave birth to the couple's first child together, a daughter named Faith Evangeline Elisa. Faith's expected twin, a boy, had died in utero.

82. Maybe they should add "republicanism" to the Mental Health Manual?

It's about time to update the DSM again anyhow.
Obviously the disease of "republicanism" would fit under the psychosis section,
since delusions and denial of reality are such prominent symptoms.

37. It was a very good, a good look at the power some city political figures have and how they

choose to wield it.

I worked for a "boss" here in Cleveland who, btw, is now serving 20 years in the federal pen for using that power for his own good, did many of the same sort of actions and inaction the mythical mayor of Chicago used to keep his power.

But they gave the Grammer character who has an incurable disease that is eating away at his brain. And he was showing serious signs of that disease. I found it floundering with no place to go. I didn't think they could really carry on much more.

It was very realistic showing how much powers these big city mayors have.

Mr. Grammer, your character had no where to go so there was no reason to continue...

39. Ever notice how the Republican "free market" worship DOESN'T apply to entertainment?

Anywhere else, they'd be saying, 'no one liked what you were selling, so you failed'. But they all seem to think that Hollywood is a massive industry that operates solely to promote an agenda. Profits are completely irrelevant.

I know, I know-- there are a billion inconsistencies in their wacky world view, but this one in particular always makes me laugh.

But I LOVED "Frasier" - mainly because of the ensemble cast and particularly the on-screen dynamic between Frasier and Niles, David Hyde-Pierce's character, whom I absolutely adored.

62. Nonsense. He won an Emmy for Frasier. He was a Repub then, too. He implied or said

that he didn't get nominated for an Emmy for Boss was because he was Republican. He thought that since he won Golden Globes or whatever for that role that he should've been nominated for an Emmy.

Total nonsense. He supports gay rights, he says. He's not one of those wacko righwingnuts. BUT, having said that, he DID endorse Bachman in 2012???? Seriously????? That MAY have weighed on some people's minds, since she is clearly pschotic and hateful. And anti-gay. The CA tv business has a big gay faction, I would guess. Still, it sounds like he's making excuses.

67. The worst post "Cheers" decision was selecting him to headline a spinoff

I know many liked it but "Frasier" is one of the most overrated television shows in history and it owed much of its acclaim and longevity to David Hyde Pierce, not Kelsey Grammar. The success of that show swelled this man's head to the point where he is not just unlikeable but down right repulsive. Blaming the cancellation of a show getting extremely poor ratings on his political leanings makes him as delusional as Donald Trump. I'm quite sure that he was not offering to take a pay cut and I can guarantee you that a big part of his show's cancellation was production costs relative to revenues coming in. No one was subscribing to Starz to watch his crappy show and it certainly wasn't going to bring in any revenue from DVD sales. He's an idiot.

69. But he did NOT say that. The article's headline is bs.

Are there no journalistic standards any more?

Here's the article's quote from Grammer:

----------------
Earlier this year, the 57-year-old complained to Jay Leno on the Tonight Show that his Republican party leanings were the reason the show was not nominated for an Emmy.

'Now explain something to me, you get a Golden Globe for ĎBoss,í but you donít even get an Emmy nomination, Leno asked.

'Yeah, its hard to figure,' Grammer said. 'It may have to do with several things, honestly, but I think itís possible, I mean, I am a, Iím a declared out of the closet Republican in Hollywood.'

'Do I believe itís possible that some young person, young voting actor, or even older voting member for the Emmys, would sit there and go, ĎYeah, thatís a great performance, but oooooh, I just hate everything he stands for?í Grammer asked, before answering sarcastically: 'I donít believe thatís possible.'
----------------

He's talking, earlier this year, before the show was cancelled, about why the show hadn't been nominated for an Emmy. Nothing about why the show was cancelled. Yet there's the headline saying he's referring to the show's cancellation.

It just isn't true. Nothing in the article backs up the headline.

What am I missing here?

Grammar never said that about the cancellation. I watched Boss and loved it. I didn't care if he was a Republican. He doesn't act nutty like some others. He was brilliant in that role.

The second season did poorly in the ratings. That's why it was cancelled. End of story.

It's a show about politics in an election year, dude. Most of us got our fill of Republican politics watching real Republican politicians. And being on a network you have to subscribe to "America's Top 5000" to even get didn't help you any either.

Bruce Willis and Patricia Heaton don't seem to be hwving trouble making money as Republican actors...maybe it's because they're actors at work and Republicans when the camera is off.

100. Welcome to "at will" employment, Kelsey. You support policies that would make everything like that.

You didn't own the show, the producers did. You were just an employee.

Haven't you been supporting politicians who want to make sure business owners have freedom to conduct their business in whatever manner they see fit?

A certain percentage of people will use any levers at their disposal to get what they want and advance whatever sits them. And if they are completely free to do so, an even larger percentage will be pulled in that direction for a variety of reasons (from having to match the competitive advantage of the most ruthless percentage, to simply feeling like a chump for following rules no one else seems to follow).

In a modern economy, the tools to push against that sort of behavior usually get classed as "big government".

The only time I order Starz when Torchwood Miracle Day was on. Plus at the time there was a twenty five dollars rebate if you keep Starz for three months. After the three months I cancelled.

I waited to see Boss season one when it came out on DVD. I like the first season.

Now he was on two successful shows in the past. If a show doesn't get the ratings that's it. Gary Sinse is a Republican and CSI NY is still on the air.

Starz is at the bottom rung when it comes to the non ad supported movie networks. Most people will have Starz's Encore channels instead of the parent company channels.
