Black Friday and Thanksgiving.

First I'd like to remind you why FDR moved the holiday one week in 1933, and fixed it in the calendar. We might complain about consumption and Black Friday sales and all that crap, but our economy depends on consumption. That is the way it is.

The problem is not that we have Black Friday. It s how it is encroaching on a secular family holiday and how retailers know they need to do this to ensure profits are met.

Remember why it is called Black Friday too. This is the weekend when retail finally turns a profit. To me it speaks of the system overall, and how it is, in my mind, somewhat broken.

If you need to shop this weekend, I urge you to participate on small business Saturday though.

1. Saturday is small business day. I don't know of very many small businesses

in my area, though. There's a clothing resale shop. Everything else is a franchise...is that a small business?

Office Max, discount shop chain Tuesday Morning. Places like that. They are chains but might be franchises.

There are some furniture consignment shops within 1/2 hour from my house.

They've been put out of business. But the reason may be the reason I don't like to shop in them, which is mainly their return policies. I had bad luck trying to return things at small businesses. They simply can't afford to take sales back after they're logged on the books. Or if they do take them back, they scowl at you while doing it. Very unpleasant.

2. I did my book buying at a local bookstore last week

I hate crowds...told them why though.

Do you have a local eatery?

5. Oh...I think there's a local small bookstore specializing in old books. And Half-Price Bookstores...

it has two stores, and it's big, but I think it's locally owned. I'll check on those two places.

Eating places....yeah, there's plenty of those. But around Thanksgiving? I'm already tired of eating, and it's not even Thansgiving yet!

3. I have never ever shopped on Black Friday

I have nothing against it, just hate crowds. In fact, for the past several years I've done virtually all of my shopping online. The only things I go to a large store for are clothes and home repair items. So you might find me early in the morning any day at Lowes or Homedepot but never at a mall.

8. thanks, do that regularly

Whenever I can I use my local hardware store before resorting to a chain. Same for shirts, jeans, boots and wearing apparel.

9. Good...

Black Friday I will be doing the strike special at aisle two, Walmart. Covering that for the paper. So will have to probably surrender and get coffee at a place with wireless after that is done.

I am so glad there is ...transit at that particular Walmart. I really do not want to try to brave the traffic.

12. The only place I shop on Black Friday is the grocery store if we forgot something.

We do our meal on Friday. It just makes it more mellow.
