Just got through watching Burn's "Dust Bowl" on P.B.S. I was wondering today......

How many descendants of these farmers who were literally saved from starvation
and illness by Federal Assistance Programs mentioned over and over again during the
presentation, today hate the fed. govt. and their assistance programs.
The documentary even pointed out how some of the farmer's at the time who were saved, hated
the concept of being assisted. How fucking insane is that!

My parents talked of this how people didn't want the help because they felt that they were failures. These were the parents of the greatest generation.

Remember that Social Security had not even been initiated yet.

Ken Burns can really tell a story.

I wonder how many people I know lived through that.

During the Depression. My grandma was eternally grateful to FDR and the Democrats for saving them from starvation with programs like the WPA. Nowadays, out of all the remaining kids and grandkids, I think only myself and my mother and my brothers and sisters are still Democrats. It only took 50 years or so for the rest of them to forget how close our family came to perishing without the social programs of the 30s. I guess they don't realize that history repeats itself.

All the ones with country roots are rabidly racist and righting.

And yet I remember my grandmother saying how they thought Roosevelt was God. They were poor farmers and the New Deal literally kept them from starving to death. My dad worked for the CCC out of high school for a while. Later he got a college degree on the GI bill, as did my uncle. But they are so righteous and conservative about the work ethic, and so racist. It's hard to bear.

That might explain why that area votes the way it does.

That's the way republicans are, they point their finger at others for doing the same damn thing they're doing. Fucking no good hypocrites!
