2. I have always said my dogs are part of my family

I have never viewed them as property even though the law tells me so.

I think it's a good ruling also.

3. I agree with it. And it should apply to cats also.

11. Totally understand that...My 120 lbs hound dog mix

thinks he is a prince and we are his loyal subjects who should cater to his every whim. If his status is increased I'm worried about what else he will make us do!!!

6. In my city, if a dog bites someone, it has to be put down.

Such a ruling may weigh the intrinsic value of the dog against the cost of treatment/pain & suffering of the bite.

Interesting can of worms.

8. Vet insurance premiums will skyrocket.

This is a dangerous ruling.

Heck, I know people (like my GF) who think their pet is worth at least $1M to them and could run the courts long enough to bankrupt a vet on whose table Fluffy checked out.

Two years ago, we paid over $10K to keep a cat alive.

I love that cat, but I wanted to whack it in the head with a hammer rather than lay out that kind of money. I mean, that's horse money, maybe a tractor - something with real value.

9. any pet should be considered more than property

the emotional bond between animal and human also has value

10. I approve.

And if Veterinarians et al have to buy liability insurance ... so be it.

15. W.T.F.

Dog went on a little journey and was stolen by a shelter who killed it because the family didn't have enough money to 'purchase' back the stolen property. How is this even up for discussion? Clearly, CLEARLY wrong.

Good ruling.

16. It's long overdue

Pets should be in a legal category of its own. Cats and dogs are not chairs, cars, and tables; they feel, they love, and they grieve.

Show my a piece of property capable of loving, feeling, and grieving; you won't be able to find it.

18. I agree that pets are not just property, but I'm afraid insurance companies will take advantage of

this and will make vets take out huge insurance policies, which will make vet bills (already high) go much higher, which will make people less apt to take their pets to the vet when necessary.
